Now it turns out that the students were directed to hit the ref by an assistant coach.

It doesn't excuse what the players did.  And of course, for an adult to instruct his players to tackle a referee, no matter what language the ref used (allegedly he had used racist language) is despicable.  The whole thing makes me sick.

I just don't believe the stuff about racial slurs at all. The use of racial slurs by an official would have offended multiple players and coaches of both teams and they all would have been complaining to the crew chief, who would have known his own neck was on the line if he didn't do anything about it. This is a BS ex post facto attempt to cloud the issue and get the players (and now, apparently, the coach) off the hook.

My son will be playing against Marble Falls this week.  It's a home game in Dripping Springs.  So hopefully our coaches won't instruct our kids to hit the referee.  Oh and BTW, when people say football is a religion in Texas.  They're not kidding.
