Update on the high school assault on a ref - BostonCard - 09-23-2015

I think it was posted here, but I can't find the thread...

Here's the original video:

Now it turns out that the students were directed to hit the ref by an assistant coach.

It doesn't excuse what the players did.  And of course, for an adult to instruct his players to tackle a referee, no matter what language the ref used (allegedly he had used racist language) is despicable.  The whole thing makes me sick.

The use of racial slurs by an official would have offended multiple players and coaches of both teams and they all would have been complaining to the crew chief, who would have known his own neck was on the line if he didn't do anything about it. This is a BS ex post facto attempt to cloud the issue and get the players (and now, apparently, the coach) off the hook.

I don't buy it either but even if true it doesn't excuse the coach and players.  At all.

No doubt those players got themselves firmly onto the recruiting radar for USC.

Assistant coach who told players to assault ref resigns.

Quote:"I later met with Coach Breed at John Jay High School ... in my office in the presence of Coach Gutierrez," [Principal] Harris wrote. "Coach Breed told me that he directed the students to make the referee pay for his racial comments and calls. He wanted to take full responsibility for his actions. Mr. Breed at one point during our conversation stated that he should have handled the referee himself."

My son will be playing against Marble Falls this week.  It's a home game in Dripping Springs.  So hopefully our coaches won't instruct our kids to hit the referee.  Oh and BTW, when people say football is a religion in Texas.  They're not kidding.

Go (whatever their name is) play for all the marbles!"

Back in the day, Marble Falls was the easternmost point where Coors could be purchased. It was the destination for many safaris from Austin and Houston.
