Quote:Missionaries do not typically become romantically involved while on their missions, and when they do, it is typically neither permanent nor with a girl.
Romance on the mission can happen in several ways. The messaging is very clear to missionaries (and anyone in the LDS church) that the path to eternal happiness is through a marriage in the Mormon temple. Missionaries are constantly reminded of that fact and this intense period in their lives makes them further invested. They may get romantically attached to a girl back home. Or there could be a female missionary they hit it off with (full disclosure, my father married one of the woman missionaries from his mission. They actually went on pseudo double dates as they were with their "partners"). Or they could meet someone in their missionary area. I'm not saying they "hook up" while on their mission (though some clearly do), but it lays the groundwork for them to pick up the phone once they've returned. It also makes them think about how important it is to find a Mormon spouse and where better to do that than at BYU?
