Local media saying that Gabe Reid has narrowed his choices to Utah & Stanford.  Will announce tomorrow.  Everything I've heard about him says he's a top quality recruit with the grades and scores needed to attend Stanford.  Can't say I wouldn't understand if he chooses Stanford.  Stanford puts players in the NFL and if it doesn't work out, a piece of paper that reads Leland Stanford, Jr. University would typically paves a nice path for the rest of his life.

Other schools that recruited Reid include both Washington schools, Oregon State, both Arizona schools and BYU.

Not a bad thing to have more mature guys coming back to Stanford after their LDS mission, but looking at it from our earth-bound, secular interest,  we need contributors on the DL now 2015 and 16/17.  But the LDS church has its priorities and Gabe has prioritized religion over school and football.  So it goes.

I would totally buy a fake Stanford diploma with Leland's middle initial being wrong.

What would be the funniest letter though?

Is it a coincidence that Warren Wonka's middle initial is G? I think not.  :)

I'm not sure if he has a mission planned or not but considering that he's from Provo I would be more surprised if he doesn't go than if he goes.  I've heard from a couple of local media people that he's probably 60/40 Stanford over Utah.

Reid's best friend on his HS team, who is committed to Utah, was recently quoted as saying that Reid is not coming to Utah and has another place in mind.  He left it open whether that place was BYU or Stanford, but I think we all know the answer.

Stanford takes plenty of LDS student-athletes who go on a mission.  (Heimuli, Barton, Faniaka, Lloyd, and Fua are recent examples on the football team.)  Reid will come back physically and emotionally more mature.

Like Taysom Hill did?

Hopefully not. Taysom transferred because he returned from his mission in late fall and didn't want to wait until June to enroll at Stanford. I find it odd that he wasn't initially aware that he wouldn't be able to enroll in January - you'd think he would have explicitly considered that when he decided on Stanford. But in any case, I expect our staff learned from Hill's experience and clarifies the situation with mormon recruits before they make their decision.

Mr. Reid, I look forward to welcoming you to the Farm in 2 1/2 years.  Please forgive Garvin for doubting your intentions based on a 4 year old grudge against a completely different person.

Lots of things can happen. The guy can meet a girl. (Which is why Mitt Romney didn't return to Stanford after his freshman year.) The coaching staff can change. Parents can apply more pressure to stay home. I'd much rather sign a guy and get him enrolled and active on the team. He can still transfer, of course, but momentum is on your side at that point.

I take your point, but I am willing to trade that lack of security for the additional maturity players have after returning from a mission. (And as a BYU fan, I can say that maturity does pay off, particularly on the lines.). Also, I don't think the risk is as great as you are imagining it to be. Mr. Reid will almost certainly not meet a girl while he is on his mission, nor will he be in contact with any other football programs.

The schoolscan't contact him, but he is immersed in the LDS church on a daily basis.  So if ever church devotion and homesickness ever cohered to skew a kid's thinking,  I'd think BYU would be the beneficiary.  But this is a view from the outside and some posters recently slammed my paranoia by pointing out , IIRC, that Taysom Hill is the only defector in recent times compared to a robust list of LDS commits who did return to Stanford after their missions.  But I still believe the risk of a change of heart,  if only through acute homesickness, and the Utah schools are not dead yet even if he commits to us.

Mr. Reid will almost certainly not meet a girl while he is on his mission,

My mistake. I thought all-male countries had been outlawed by Title IX.

If your remark about him meeting a girl was supposed to have anything to do with his future life plans, then obviously you didn't mean it in this sense. Missionaries do not typically become romantically involved while on their missions, and when they do, it is typically neither permanent nor with a girl.

BYU picks up a player previously committed to another school after a mission once every few years, at best. It could happen, but it is not a major concern.

Cardcoug, we saw this happen in Book of Mormon so it is possible in real life.  Isn't it?

haha! You'll have to remind me of which part you have in mind. Its been quite a while since I cracked that spine, and the only relevant story I can remember is the missionary Ammon declining a Lamanite princess so that he can teach the gospel instead.

edit: oh... you presumably mean the musical. whoops. I haven't seen it yet...

Haha no not livestock. Missionaries serve for about 2 years in a completely different environment. They learn new languages, and a bunch of new things. Missionaries however cannot have any relations with women romantically or anyone. Their sole purpose is to go serve and preach and they don't do anything bad. Return missionaries come back more disciplined, less likely to do stupid stuff, and they generally come back a little taller because they grow on their missions. Better yet they still 4-5 years of eligibility left

It's always great to get the perspective of student athletes and their families. Keep in mind, CardBoard members, that the rules for contact with prospective student athletes are different from those for student athletes who are already enrolled.

Please take a minute to review the post above, which specifies permissible contact with both prospective student athletes and enrolled students.
