1. QB needs reconsideration. I turned on the radio while watching so I could hear Husak. I really think he gives very intelligent criticism of the QB and play calling I have never heard him so harsh. But more to the point, he was able to point out specifically what Hogan did wrong on nearly every play. It is mainly his vision and his inability to see the field. It really does seem as if he is playing with side blinders on. This causes him to miss open receivers and to miss blitzes. By not scanning the field, he also telegraphs the throw and makes it easier to defend. The TV announcers said that opponent Defensive Coordinators were now instructing their secondary to watch for when Hogan lowers the ball before his throw, since that gives them warning to start to break on the ball. As if that were not enough, he was also very inaccurate today. The inaccuracy does not only result in missed receivers, but cuts way down on yards after catch.
2. Offensive Coordinator needs reconsideration. I've said this from time to time over the last year and a half, but it has become painfully obvious. Game after game announcers and fans figure out what the opponent defense is doing to stop us and how to counter it before our OC reacts. Tonight it became obvious early in the game that ASU--which has a terrible defense--was run-blitzing and daring Hogan to use the short/intermediate pass. The few times we passed short to the TEs it worked well, but we did not stick with it. It seemed ridiculous that the TV and radio announcers were all saying the same thing but our playcalling was way too slow to react. Announcers also noted that the running back packages were tipping the opponent off as to playcalls. Remember that ASU has one of the most inexperienced and worst defenses in the Pac 12. They had some sort of advantage over us that cannot be explained by their talent level.
Lots of other things were bad and warrant criticism, but I will stop with those two. When the offense has regressed to Walt levels, it is time to make major changes with the two people who can change it the fastest.
