Hey guys, ND guy here (dont kick me out yet)  came here looking for some info on Stanford.  Pumped for the game!  I feel like its going to be a good one.  Reading a lot of interesting things about both teams (some seem to be stretching the truth) and i could do without the whole University of Dead Fake Girlfriend thing - i mean come on, thats a little old.

But my thoughts,

I have read that a lot of people don't see where Golson is dynamic or a game changer, let me tell you, he is.  dont be fooled by his total rushing yards, because he is not a running qb.  But he extends plays like crazy and always keeps his eyes down field.  He will pass it at the last second just when you think he is going to run.  And his arm is crazy strong.  I have seen him throw it 60+ yards without really setting his feet.  The longest in game completion that i have seen was at about 70 yards traveled across the field.  A big deal has been made of his 25 completions and the dispute is that they were all short pass - and a lot of them were, but that is what syracuse was giving us as they were blitzing every play, but not all were, he had 2 touchdowns during that run (a 78 and a 25 i believe) and probably 8-10 passes of +10 yards, but obviously that has no bearing on this game other than he is patient enough to take what the D is giving him. 

Someone had posted that our receivers were a weakness for us, and i have to disagree strongly, we have very good receivers and may be getting another back before kickoff. That status of the 5 players withheld is a big deal for this game. If the right ones are declared clear to play, its a big swing for ND.  Where our biggest weakness on O is, is in our running game and our evolving line play.  They are getting better, but I believe stanford will have a significant edge over them, but golson removes some of that advantage.  Our running backs are very good, but have struggled behind the line play.

Our defense is hard to read at this point.  They are playing much better than expected, but stanford is obviosly a better team than we have faced.  But besides the suspended players, we have been have a lot of injuries on the D so far, so besides the suspensions, this game should be the healthiest we have been all year.  Be ready to be impressed by Jaylon Smith - kid is crazy good, still adjusting to a new position, but he is fun to watch.

This is probably the overall fastest ND team you guys have seen, but there are still issues because there are a lot of young guys out there who are learning every game.  So we do make mistakes.  The rice game for example, over half of their passing yards were on 3 plays - all to wide open receivers due to blown assignments - which is where their 1st team points came from. 

Special teams are still evolving as well.  We seem to have a very good kicker, return game is coming along, but very inconsistent. 

I know there is a lot of talk about the refs, i have rewatched the stanford game and i think the "questions calls" could be split 50/50 for each team.  Some went our way, but i saw some that went  your way.  Obviously the ending in 2012 is the big one, but no need to get into that.  Other than Sryacuse, we have had very few penalties, (8 in that game).  So hopefully we can get back to that. 

Overall, i see advantages for both teams in specific situations.  If its coming down to the wire, i like ND's chances because Golson has experience in those situations.  And i am wondering if kelly is going to go more fast pace than usual too. 

From what i have seen of Stanford, they are tough as usual, struggle in the red zone, but great on defense.  I think you guys beat us up, but our depth at the skill positions will keep in to a 1 score game either way. 

My prediction is ND - 24, Stanford 20

I think the key to this game will be how Stanford's offense performs inside of ND's 35 yard line.  If you have watched Stanford this year, no revelation there.  They have all the tools: wideouts, tight ends, offensive line, speed, and QB.  If there is a missing piece, it is a pile driving running back.  The question is will they cough up penalty flags and footballs or put the ball in the end zone.  The only thing that has held back Stanford's offense this year is itself.  Neither u$c nor UW did it without a major assist from Stanford themselves.  The trend towards disciplined, mistake free performance we Card fans have grown accustomed to is in a positive direction.  If that continues against ND, then I am expecting a final score of something like 24-13 Stanford wins.

Only old because the student it involved left 2 years ago.  And university of Sex for Papers... you got any truth to that, because that is simply one of the 10 rumors of the situation, can you really use it for a name until its been proven?  Now if it is proven, then it would accurate.

Ill give you holding USCs passing, but i think our is better - better qb and receivers, and i question UW as a very good passing team is a stretch (ranked 112).  I do believe the redzone performance will win the game, and thats why i think we will win.

ok... cause im pretty sure hes doing his work now.  Yes he cheated, paid the price, and came back... give him a little credit for that?  you act like the academics between the 2 schools are all that different.  Both are great institutions.  So no need to go there.

But i am guessing by your work around of the actual question, that you know that golson/kelly are better, so thanks for that.  But you can keep insulting ND instead of having a real discussion and answering a simple question.  - For the record, i am ok if people prefer hogan, just a simple open question.

fair point, so thats why i asked.  But i would say IF stanfords schedule is tougher, it is only slightly.  You can not look at NDs schedule and slam them for it.  I have nothing but respect for Stanford, but ND plays real teams too.

And shaw does have a better record at stanford than kelly does at ND (37-8 vs. 41-15) BUT Shaw came into a MUCH MUCH better position at Stanford than Kelly did at ND,  ND has had to rebuild a lot, and i think they are still a year away from really being something great.  Heck i could have coached 2011 stanford to 10 wins.

Really?  Shaw is the perfect fit for Stanford, an alum, a great coach and a fine ambassador for the school.  the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends has been hit with nothing but scandal after scandal since Kelly arrived, he generally looks as if his head is going to explode on the sidelines and he seems much more like a liability to the school than an ambassador.  Kids go to Stanford because of Shaw; kids go to the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends despite Kelly.

I agree with Simas: the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends has not seen a defense like Stanford.  Golson better be every bit the QB you think he is, because he's going to be running for his life all afternoon.  The only thing that will keep the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends in this game is Stanford's red zone woes. 

I expect a low scoring game with Stanford coming out on top 20-13 in OT.  Golson is turned back on 4th down at the goal line after he trips on a term paper someone was writing for one of the the University of Dead Fake Girlfriends players that was blown onto the field by the ghost of Teo's fake girlfriend in a valiant effort to aid the team of her former school.

OK, so i thought this would be a game where i could come to the opposing teams message board and have an actual discussion about the game and get into specifics, but apparently not.

To clarify, I have nothing but respect for stanford AND shaw.  I think he is a great fit and a perfect fit for Stanford.  But i was asking specifically about coaching techniques.  I think kelly has done more with less, but Shaw has been able to maintain what he has, so that is great to. 

I was trying to keep this discussion about the game, but you can keep bashing ND for their mistakes, cause i am sure Stanford has always been perfect?  I guess their is no mutual respect between universities that have higher standards. 

But to try and get it back on track, I agree ND has not seen a defense like stanfords yet, but i think they have enough weapons IF the O-line can make some adjustments and play better than they have, that ND can compete with stanfords D.  20-13 OT is a fair guess, very possible.  But why do you feel the need to keep slamming golson for the fact that he cheated?  I suppose you have never made a mistake, when you did, did you stand up and take ownership?  Would you have waited a whole year to play and come back when you had other colleges calling?  Yes he screwed up, but im proud for what he has done since then!

Personally,  I have a bad feeling about this game.  Stanford's offense has some problems/concerns.  QB inconsistency is one of them.  Not having an every down RB is another.  Offensive play-calling is yet another.  And the game is at your house. 

On the other side,  Golson is back and productive for you.  Your offense seems to be working  (scoreboard!).  Provisionally,  Kelly has developed the ability to not go all purple and screamy and seems to actually be coaching his QB during games. Bummer. We considered all that yelling just wind at our backs.  Your recruiting has been consistent while Stanford is experiencing a bit of a hangover from the graduation of two outstanding classes.

Most of the trends are in your favor.  Dunno who will win, but I know that if ND loses, it will feel
like they blew a very good opportunity.  So, by logic,  I guess that means ND is favored and a win by you not unexpected.

I just dont know which way to go on the game, freakin can't wait till saturday.  I think if we can get a couple of our suspended guys back (meaning they have been cleared) than i would say we could get one here, if they dont, its anybody's game.

From my perspective, all of my concerns about the defense leading into the season are gone. If Golson can light up the Stanford D, I think we will all grudgingly admit the better team won. You just won't find a lot of people on the Stanford side who believe he can.

But despite our red zone woes, the offense has managed to move the ball. For all that "Hogan doesn't impress me" is a Stanford opponent's weekly talking point, he has regularly beaten teams with guys who are considered better than him.

If they are cleared, then they will play - according to reports.  They have been staying in shape and have had access to everything except for practice.  I am sure that they have been kept up to speed on the game plan, especially this week - being as this is when they will hear.  Getting hit is the biggest thing they have been missed.  So its not like they are going to play the whole game, but enough to have an impact  i would guess.

If they are cleared, then they will play - according to reports.  They have been staying in shape and have had access to everything except for practice.  I am sure that they have been kept up to speed on the game plan, especially this week - being as this is when they will hear.  Getting hit is the biggest thing they have been missed.  So its not like they are going to play the whole game, but enough to have an impact  i would guess.
