Saw it [on TV] when it happened. It was certainly a little bit of a surprise, having watched M.onty over the years.Â

How is Monty a traitor? He left to take on a greater career challenge. When he returned to coaching, Stanford's men's basketball team had a head coach.

I don't see Monty as a traitor. He left for a good reason and has not denigrated Stanford. When an opportunity came along to continue his career without having to move, he took it. Nothing wrong with that.
The clip cuts out when the player comes back into the game. According to Contra Costa Times, he then lit up the place, the team dug itself out of the hole they were in and won the game. I'm not a fan of getting physical. But I don't think Monty has a record of that kind of thing. Maybe this was an unusual situation.

Not being a close personal friend of the Big 12 Commissioner, I seriously doubt there would be any reaction at all. Although I am open to persuasion, it would take a bit more than suggestions of rumors. When I was on campus, it was common knowledge that it was just not possible to have a decent basketball team at Stanford. Monty had a significant role in debunking that line of BS. It would take pretty good evidence of something awful for me to write him off as a traitor.

I take the traitor moniker as just part of the Kal hatred schtick here, nothing personal or truly serious. Former coach here, now coaching for Kal = traitor. Just like everyone at Kal is automatically a weenie, no matter how nice they might be in real life.

Woody Hayes got famous for punching an opposing player. Bobby Knight would be the more relevant analogy.

The shove is a big deal, IMO. Not because of the impact a physical act like that has, but because of what it represents. If a coach has to resort to physical contact to get his team to perform, that coach is failing to properly prepare his charges. Monty wants to win and has fire during games, but I question how much he has at all other times.Â
California is the perfect place for Monty. He will never be pushed to do better, he doesn't want another job, and he is comfy.

Neither the Pac-12 nor Cal will giving Monty any more than a reprimand:

I wonder if there's underlying anger and disappointment on Monty's part. He probably figured he had a better chance to win it all at Cal due to the lack of academic standards in admissions.

Benedict Monty was all set to coach at LMU down south. He's from Long Beach originally and his son played for LMU. Kudos to Barbour for sweeping in at the last minute and pulling him to UCB. OutsiderFan, I have brobdingnagian respect for Monty and what he did to make Stanford a basketball power. I came here in the Davis Doldrum's where he ranted about not being able to recruit due to academics (remember Chris Monk). Monty would not have come back to take Trent's place as Johnson was his protege. Curious as to what people think Bob Bowlsby would say about Monty?? I know there was an issue with his Stanford income at the time (he was on the AD payroll and playing regularly up at the Stanford GC).
I lost some respect for Monty when he went to UCB. I did not begrudge his move to the NBA, but would you see John Wooden ever coatching at U$C?! NO! Frankly, I thought he might have gone to UofA. The job he really wanted was Indiana. As Garvin and others have pointed out, I think he's past his prime and is setting things up for his son. This latest issue points to what I think will be his retirement.  A sad mark on a solid record.

Obviously it's just at rumor stage and is in no way confirmed, but the rumor does help to account for why generally-otherwise-competent Bowlsby was so ineffective in that particular search.

Thanks Wash$. I had never heard this rumor. I have a hard time with it as I think Monty would have a hard time replacing Trent after so many years of having him on his staff. The reigns had been passed. Why would he have reached out to UofI and negotiated the deal with LMU? A number of us were not that high on Trent at the time, but I don't remember hearing anything serious about Monty stepping in.  I'll do some digging on this one though.Â
