As a California fan (getting harder and harder to say that), all I wanted was a game in which the Bares didn't embarrass themselves to a ESPN audience (once again). I didn't even need a win to feel some kind of reason for optimism in 2012.
No need to hash over the sh*t stains California left in its bed last night, so I'll get right to the conclusions...
I have reached the point I have to question anybody that would sign up to play for Tedsel. How can anyone who is an elite player and really wants to win, conceivably think he is going to with that guy in charge? Sure, he is nice, loves the players, has a great family atmosphere, etc., but anyone who watches games like last night's can't possibly think a team that plays like that is ever going to compete for any kind of title other than "most underachieving team" in the conference or country.
Aziz Shittu would be great at California and playing for Tosh Lupoi is obviously good for one's professional career aspirations, but the truth is he will get as good an education at California or Stanford, and have a much better football experience at Stanford. I honestly don't know why Zach Kline or Bryce Treggs would sign up for Tedsel either. Ditto Shaq Thompson and Darius Hamilton. Sure, improved talent will make California better, but they are never, ever going to win or even get to a Pac-12 championship as long as Tedsel is there.Â
The really sad thing is the Bares' OL will probably be worse in 2012 than 2011. Maynard isn't going to get much better, and any new QB would be thrown to the wolves with a lousy OL and all True Frosh WRs, except Keenan Allen.
