A lot of focus on the refs, but I thought Dawkins played the lineup game very poorly here. Against a team with an aggressive defense, you need to loosen them up--you need shooting. Dawkins went with Huestis and Mann on the floor together for long stretches, sometimes with a gimpy Dwight Powell and sometimes with Jack Trotter, which put three nonentities shooting-wise together. The commentators sometimes wondered "what happened to Josh Owens?": well, the answer was that he was being guarded by his own team.
It wasn't an accident that, when Dawkins inserted John Gage out of desperation, the offense started scoring again.
I won't claim this is a universally generalizable prescription--Huestis is a very useful player, Trotter is five fouls and Mann is an excellent ploy by the TV industry to get frustrated Stanford fans to break their TVs and buy new ones--but sometimes you need shooting. Like, when you want to score. Having a big man who shoots as sweetly as Gage is a very rare asset and it should be deployed more frequently.
If there's anything to like out of this game--and I would argue there's very, very little--it's that Chasson Randle is the realest deal.
