Re: Final: Butler 71, Stanford 66 - washingtonismoney - 12-22-2011

A lot of focus on the refs, but I thought Dawkins played the lineup game very poorly here. Against a team with an aggressive defense, you need to loosen them up--you need shooting. Dawkins went with Huestis and Mann on the floor together for long stretches, sometimes with a gimpy Dwight Powell and sometimes with Jack Trotter, which put three nonentities shooting-wise together. The commentators sometimes wondered "what happened to Josh Owens?": well, the answer was that he was being guarded by his own team.

It wasn't an accident that, when Dawkins inserted John Gage out of desperation, the offense started scoring again.

I won't claim this is a universally generalizable prescription--Huestis is a very useful player, Trotter is five fouls and Mann is an excellent ploy by the TV industry to get frustrated Stanford fans to break their TVs and buy new ones--but sometimes you need shooting. Like, when you want to score. Having a big man who shoots as sweetly as Gage is a very rare asset and it should be deployed more frequently.

If there's anything to like out of this game--and I would argue there's very, very little--it's that Chasson Randle is the realest deal.

I was hoping Randle would be more aggressive in the final minutes, as Owens clearly was not having as easy a time with his offense as earlier in the game.

How many of Mann's shots were blocked?

Powell is getting too many minutes for a guy who just isn't an offensive threat

Powell, I believe, was injured earlier in the game. When healthy and when his mind's right, he's a very good offensive player--just a subtle one. The comparison I made the first time I saw him was Lamar Odom. Sadly, we seem to have gotten a lot of "bad, early Lamar Odom" so far in his career. Hopefully, like Lamar, he can straighten it out and be a highly effective yet subtle player.

Powell's minutes are already down this year. Too many turnovers, as well.

Although Mann played reasonably well in the first half, he was clearly the difference in the game -- in a negative sense -- in the second.  There was a sequence in which I'm pretty sure he single-handedly gave them a several point swing in about 20 seconds: ridiculous turnover, followed by letting the man who just took the ball score on him (and fouling him so he could add his free throw), immediately followed by another ridiculous turnover and Butler bucket.  Then, when he got the ball on the offensive end, they either sagged back on everyone else (knowing he couldn't shoot over them) or waited for him to try to drive so they could block his shot again.  I'm a Dawkins fan, in general, but I just don't get this.  Brown obviously struggled last night too, so it's not all on Mann, but at least Brown shows his upside for more than a few minutes a game every other game or so.  Ugghhh!  >:(
