Preview:
Washington is not a very good team this year. They are 8-9 so far, having lost to Tulane, Fordham, as well as to powerhouses like Oregon, Oregon State, Mississippi State. Their RPI is at 103. That said, they can be dangerous at times. They were not blown out by Oregon and Oregon State, and they managed a win against Colorado. Junior guard Amber Melgoza, who emerged after the graduation of Plum, is once again playing like a star. She is averaging 19 ppg and they are mostly coming from inside. No one else is in double digits. Redshirt senior pointguard Jenna Moser is hitting 45% of her threes but she doesn't take that many. She is a fascinating player--a walk-on practice player who was given a full scholarship. They have a 6'4" freshman from Australia that has started 10 games this year.
I've seen press discussing Maya Dodson's "stress reaction" in her foot--so we might expect as much time out as Lexie just went though. Lexie missed 9 games. Maya has missed 4 so far. Naturally, I would be most delighted to see Maya back in a game well before our brutal six game stretch against Cal, the Oregon and SoCal schools begins.
Overview:
Offensive and defensive domination by Stanford tonight, holding Washington's star Melgoza to 8 while even our third string increased the lead. Major stories of the night--Lexie is back to full health, 10 players scored, 9 players got double digit minutes. A happy night all around.
Character of the game:
Williams opened up with two successful treys, and we were off to a 27-11 first quarter romp. It was never close. The second quarter our offense was "off," but it roared back to life in the second half, and the lead just kept getting bigger. Tara got a chance to give our deep bench significant minutes, and it was heartwarming to see Brewer hit a couple of treys, Wilson get 5 assists and 3 steals, including a dramatic one that saved a sure basket, and everyone else having fun with the romp.
Performances:
Lacie got most of the minutes defending Melgoza, and she did very well, holding their superstar to 8 points. I felt her long reach and frenetic energy was crucial in the effort. And if she can defend Melgoza, that gives me hope that we have our lock down defender for future games against the like of Ionescu, etc.
Smith was on fire offensively, hitting 3/6 from long range and accumulating 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Williams scored an efficient 22 points and nabbed 4 steals.
Carrington had 12 points and 11 rebounds--a double double.
As a team, we shot 48% and held Washington to 35%. We had 20 offensive rebounds--Washington only had 20 defensive rebounds, so we got half our misses back.
Conclusion:
Games like this are just what the doctor ordered, to help get our team healthy and give our bench some confidence and experience. But I don't think it is an indicator of hour hard the season will get in a couple of weeks!
