WBB: Stanford 91 Washington 54 - 81alum - 01-17-2019

Preview:

Washington is not a very good team this year.  They are 8-9 so far, having lost to Tulane, Fordham, as well as to powerhouses like Oregon, Oregon State, Mississippi State.  Their RPI is at 103.  That said, they can be dangerous at times.  They were not blown out by Oregon and Oregon State, and they managed a win against Colorado.  Junior guard Amber Melgoza, who emerged after the graduation of Plum,  is once again playing like a star.  She is averaging 19 ppg and they are mostly coming from inside.  No one else is in double digits.  Redshirt senior pointguard Jenna Moser is hitting 45% of her threes but she doesn't take that many.  She is a fascinating player--a walk-on practice player who was given a full scholarship.  They have a 6'4" freshman from Australia that has started 10 games this year.

I've seen press discussing Maya Dodson's "stress reaction" in her foot--so we might expect as much time out as Lexie just went though.  Lexie missed 9 games.  Maya has missed 4 so far.  Naturally, I would be most delighted to see Maya back in a game well before our brutal six game stretch against Cal, the Oregon and SoCal schools begins.

Overview:

Offensive and defensive domination by Stanford tonight, holding Washington's star Melgoza to 8 while even our third string increased the lead.  Major stories of the night--Lexie is back to full health, 10 players scored, 9 players got double digit minutes.  A happy night all around.

Character of the game:

Williams opened up with two successful treys, and we were off to a 27-11 first quarter romp.  It was never close.  The second quarter our offense was "off," but it roared back to life in the second half, and the lead just kept getting bigger.  Tara got a chance to give our deep bench significant minutes, and it was heartwarming to see Brewer hit a couple of treys,  Wilson get 5 assists and 3 steals, including a dramatic one that saved a sure basket, and everyone else having fun with the romp.

Performances:

Lacie got most of the minutes defending Melgoza, and she did very well, holding their superstar to 8 points.  I felt her long reach and frenetic energy was crucial in the effort. And if she can defend Melgoza, that gives me hope that we have our lock down defender for future games against the like of Ionescu, etc.

Smith was on fire offensively, hitting 3/6 from long range and accumulating 27 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 blocks.

Williams scored an efficient 22 points and nabbed 4 steals.

Carrington had 12 points and 11 rebounds--a double double.

As a team, we shot 48% and held Washington to 35%.  We had 20 offensive rebounds--Washington only had 20 defensive rebounds,  so we got half our misses back.

Conclusion:

Games like this are just what the doctor ordered, to help get our team healthy and give our bench some confidence and experience.  But I don't think it is an indicator of hour hard the season will get in a couple of weeks!

Be careful what you say, the woofing gods might hear you.

Oh, I stand by what I said.  That doesn't mean we can't lose to them--or that I'm being arrogant.  Last year our game in Seattle was within 4 points with a few minutes left in the game, and we gave up 40 to Melgoza.  So if she gets hot and has one of those perfect days, anything is possible for them.  We dominated them at Maples, however, in a 26 point win.

But the last time we lost to a team with a losing record you have to go back to 2015.  Other "bad" losses weren't really so bad.  The two losses to Gonzaga, the loss to Western Illinois, the loss to Santa Clara--all were darn good teams with winning records.  I believe the only team with a losing record that has beaten us in many years is Arizona in 2015--at their place.

I don't think you correctly read the title of this thread.

Yeah my bad. Wrong thread LOL

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Washington Friday 6pm - Lorcan - 01-17-2019

It’s worth noting that Gonzaga went down to BYU, and the Lady Vols lost their fourth straight as they lost for the fifth straight time to Alabama.

Things are positively cheery in Knoxville.

well, if there were any doubts about the difference that a great coach makes, Tennessee is dispelling them. Doesn't bode well for us when Tara retires!

I worry too, however, Kate Paye is brighter than Holly Warlick, and Tara also has had a track record of training many successful coaches.  I suspect Tara is preparing Kate far better than Pat prepared Holly.   Stanford also has a gigantic recruiting advantage that doesn't depend on Tara: it is Stanford, and the academics will always be a draw for a certain kind of elite player.   (Like the kind who goes on to earn an MBA and JD from Stanford, becomes a corporate lawyer, and then gives it all up to go back to be a coach!)

While I hate to even think about an era after Tara, it might not be as bad as Tennessee has had it.   In any case, why on earth would Tara even consider retirement for another four or five years, given the incredible talent that she is going to enjoy working with :)

If indeed Maya's ailment is a similar injury, severity and timetable for recovery as Lexie's, then I don't believe we can use Lexie's absence in terms of games as an accurate measure of how long Dodson could be out, since the span of those games covered finals break and the subsequent limited December schedule due to the holidays. We only played 9 games in a month and a half during that stretch. Our conference schedule is more condensed.

Lexie's last game before her injury was against San Francisco on Nov. 15 and there was an eight day gap until our next game against Florida Gulf Coast (due to the Ohio State game cancellation), so we are not sure when she got injured during that time period. She didn't play again until UCLA on January 6 (a span of 52 days if we assume she got injured or showed signs of injury soon after the San Francisco game).

Maya's last game before she got injured was December 29th against Northridge. If we assumed a similar timetable as Lexie's injury (and we have no idea if they are related in severity and recovery period needed), then Maya wouldn't be due back until the Arizona game on February 22nd (unfortunately after the Cal x2, Oregon and SoCal stretch).

I really hope that Tara's public pronouncements that Maya will be back soon is actually soon (as in the next couple weeks) and not more in terms of how she described it as sometime before season's end. If we harbor any hopes of defeating Oregon and going far in the postseason, we need a healthy and effective Dodson to provide not only a post scoring threat to complement Alanna, but the rebounding and defense needed against the Ruthy Hebards, Kalani Browns, Teira McGowans of the world

Looks like Maya is still out. Not in a boot, fwiw.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Washington Friday 6pm - BostonCard - 01-18-2019

It's halftime and we are up 44-27.  Smith has 13, Williams has 11, and Carrington has 8.  Leading scorer for the Huskies has 7.

Nice story about Di here:

It mentions in passing that Tara expects Maya to be out "a couple more weeks."

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Washington Friday 6pm - BostonCard - 01-18-2019

Alana Smith is having herself a day.  21 points and it is only the third quarter.

Even the woofing gods were powerless tonight.  We win 91-54.  Alana with 27 points and 13 boards, three players were in double digits.  Stat of the game was 20, as in offensive boards.  On a night when only 40 rebounds were available on our end of the basket, we recovered half of them.  That and UW committing twenty two turnovers meant that we shot the ball 20 times more than the Huskies.

My write-up is done at the top.  A happy game.  It was good to see Dodson walking without a boot, and Lexie back to full strength.   And especially good to see Lacie et. al. hold Melgoza to 8.  A little bit better than giving Melgoza 40, which is what happened the last time we played them.

RE: WBB: Stanford 91 Washington 54 - BobK - 01-19-2019

A shout out to Brewer for her excellent 4th quarter play

Also Wilson played very well.

Cal beat Washington State easily

ASU lost by just 6 at Oregon

RE: WBB: Stanford 91 Washington 54 - qwerty49 - 01-19-2019

UW had no post game as far as I could see.

All 3 of our PGs could beat their defenders off the dribble at will.

Carrington’s brace looks formidable — I sure hope she holds up the whole season. She’s a real presence on the court and doing great work on the boards.

I do wish some of our players could get rid of the reflex habit of putting the ball on the floor during a putback.

RE: WBB: Stanford 91 Washington 54 - 81alum - 01-19-2019

On the basis of our 37 point win over Washington, our RPI fell from 2 to 4.   I guess that is what playing a weak team does to you. And of course the limits of the RPI number.

RE: WBB: Stanford 91 Washington 54 - BobK - 01-19-2019

In fairness Washington lost a top starter at guard and their probably post before the season started. Both had to retire

Margin of victory does not affect RPI.  Just your opponents record, and their opponents record, plus your own.
