The question is how much of the staff will be left for continuity. Harbaugh might well pick off a few of his best buds, one might get a head coaching job, etc. etc. The last little variable to consider is that Roman and Shaw are considered as co-equals and news reports mention \'em both. That was fine when Harbaugh was the leader, but what happens when one or the other is elevated?
The other issue with promoting someone from within is that that guy--whether it\'s Roman or Shaw--doesn\'t have head coaching experience. Normally I\'m not too hung up on that, but there is a learning curve. Considering the potential next year\'s team has (have you seen the schedule? It\'s favorable:

That said, of the outside candidates, only Chris Petersen really excites me. The rest are adventures in "meh."
Late edit: For example, a Chronicle beat writer calls Fangio-to-49ers "a foregone conclusion." But I thought they hated each other! (

Later edit: In the interesting-speculation realm, Bruce Feldman (a pretty solid ESPN reporter) thinks that Fangio-to-49ers helps Shaw:
