We may be talking to Chris Petersen - fyao - 01-07-2011
of Boise State. Â That news flashed at the bottom of my TV screen.

Also mentioned here, as speculation:

Any chance that Petersen could bring Kellen Moore with him? Â We just happen to have an opening at quarterback for 2012...
Re: We may be talking to Chris Petersen - rwait08 - 01-07-2011
After the whole Harbaugh mess, I\'m going to ignore all of these reports.
Re: We may be talking to Chris Petersen - bulldogbigred - 01-07-2011
Chris Peterson would be a great fit. He is brings the same energy like Harbaugh. Peterson is somewhat of a pass-happy coach but I don\'t mind that with Andrew Luck staying. I bet Peterson would love to get an offer from Stanford because he can win a National Championship here, while a Boise State is almost impossible, because of the BCS.
Does anybody think that Mike Leach will
not be a good fit for Stanford? His type of offense is too spread out and Stanford is not built for the run and shoot offense.
Re: We may be talking to Chris Petersen - rwait08 - 01-07-2011
Totally. Â And I would love to land Chris Petersen. Â I\'m just going to try not to get emotionally invested in any one candidate. Â

Does Chris Petersen know what to do with academic requirements...?

Re: We may be talking to Chris Petersen - pincemob - 01-07-2011
I hope we are talking to some serious names, like Chris Petersen. If I had a word with Hennessey/Bowlsby, I think I would ask them to seriously contemplate the fact that Andrew Luck put $50M on the line for this school. If they put 1/4 of that on the line for a coach, we\'ll get a serious coach. Go Stanford!

If the players want Shaw, as was alluded to in the other thread, by all means--an internal hire would be great.
Re: We may be talking to Chris Petersen - pincemob - 01-07-2011
Doug Baldwin made a public pitch for Shaw, saying "all the players" want him. He says he also hopes they keep Fangio. See article below.
Unfortunately we also heard today that Harbaugh wants his best people from Stanford with the Niners. Could D-Shaw round out a staff if he lost his best 3-4 people?

Re: We may be talking to Chris Petersen -

ugh...disemboweling the coaching staff is the worst case scenario. Â these guys deserve a shot at the national championship, and next season may be the best shot Stanford has ever gotten in the modern era of football (future notwithstanding).
Re: We may be talking to Chris Petersen - fyao - 01-07-2011
Apparently Stanford contacted Petersen, not the other way around:

I definitely respect the players\' opinions, but I assume also that players have loyalties that may keep them from seeing the big picture. Â Apparently, the players in Dallas loved Wade Philips, but he was hardly an effective head coach. Â Someone like Peterson, with his track record of success, sounds like a great fit.
Someone mentioned Mike Leach formerly of Texas Tech. Â The end of his time there, with accusations of abusive behavior toward team members, makes me extremely leery of hiring him, despite the success of his program. Â In that case I would much rather look at an internal hire, or Brady Hoke or Willie Taggart
Re: We may be talking to Chris Petersen -

I had presumed that Stanford players would, for the most part, be able to gauge a situation relatively objectively. Â I just want the team\'s schematic and emotional identity to remain intact.

and from this we can conclude.....????

I think the team preferences should matter because this team is good! Â Their happiness is also critical to keeping the recruiting going.
Outside of the team chemistry angle. Â This Stanford team will finish #2-#4 in the final polls. Â The Offense has set all kinds of Stanford records and a few FBS ones too. Â So it seems reasonable to believe that the staff must have some talent. Â The defensive turnaround is perhaps more amazing, since everyone understands it was never a deep or blazzingly quick side.
Spin it a different way. Â If JH signed a 10 year deal, my guess is that some of these assistants would have been hired away as HCs at some very good FBS schools. Â What more does an assistant/associate/coordinator need to do to be considered for a promotion?
I think there are two or three coaches that will be on other high profile programs\' short lists if Stanford decides to go a different direction. Â Why not make one of them Stanford\'s HC.

David Shaw could be the next Chris Petersen: the guy who got promoted and not only maintained success, but improved on it.
(Dan Hawkins was wildly popular and very hot with lots of opportunities when he left Boise. Now, not so much.)
BTW, please do not get crazy and hire Hawkins or some other retread, Bowlsby.
What I take away from that -
JohnR34231 - 01-08-2011
An assistant coach who is popular with his players may or may not be a good choice for head coach. I worry that a coach who is too well liked may not be demanding enough, not willing to push players out of their comfort zones.
Chris Petersen is my top choice. If he doesn\'t want it, I leave it to Bowlsby\'s what I hope is good judgment.

The question is how much of the staff will be left for continuity. Harbaugh might well pick off a few of his best buds, one might get a head coaching job, etc. etc. The last little variable to consider is that Roman and Shaw are considered as co-equals and news reports mention \'em both. That was fine when Harbaugh was the leader, but what happens when one or the other is elevated?
The other issue with promoting someone from within is that that guy--whether it\'s Roman or Shaw--doesn\'t have head coaching experience. Normally I\'m not too hung up on that, but there is a learning curve. Considering the potential next year\'s team has (have you seen the schedule? It\'s favorable:
http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa-11/pac-10/2011-stanford-cardinal-football-schedule.php), if everything else is equal, I\'d prefer someone with previous head coaching experience.
That said, of the outside candidates, only Chris Petersen really excites me. The rest are adventures in "meh."
Late edit: For example, a Chronicle beat writer calls Fangio-to-49ers "a foregone conclusion." But I thought they hated each other! (

Later edit: In the interesting-speculation realm, Bruce Feldman (a pretty solid ESPN reporter) thinks that Fangio-to-49ers helps Shaw:
