I always thought the PAC should have invited BYU instead of Utah. They make a excellent "villain" in athletics and a much larger fan base.

Not sure I care at all, but my magic bullet to fix the Big 12 is to have the conference champ play Notre Dame/top-ranked independent on conference championship weekend.
It will never happen because of TV rights, but I think the Big 12 would be smart to at least make some overtures and see what happens.

You think either of those two add more TVs in those cities than Texas does? That seems wildly improbable to me.

From what I've read the most important thing is getting into new markets so you can increase your carriage fees. BYU really ought to look into joining the conference where their Holy War rivals belong...the Pac-12. And maybe we can absorb Boise State for balance. *Cue sound of UW Huskies trembling in fear.

I think the reason that BYU was kept out, not to mention BSU, is that the Pac-12 wanted to keep the academic standards up. Colorado and Utah both have reasonable academic credentials (at least better than OSU, WSU, and ASU); Colorado is a member of the AAU (I thought Utah was, but I was wrong).

US News is not the best source, but it's one source that attempts to be somewhat transparent in its methodology. That source has BYU ahead of all Pac-12 schools except Washington and the four California schools.

Caveat, I'm no expert here, but I think the issue was not about the quality of undergrad students, which I think USNWR is a proxy for. BYU undergrad is competitive to get into and all else equal, I would take a BYU grad applying for a job over one from almost every other Pac12 school. I think the issue was around the research quality of the schools. BYU is mostly an undergrad school with MBA and Law Schools. They are not known for their research contributions. When this was discussed 4-5 years ago, I remember people discussing the fact that athletic revenue is dwarfed relative to money raised for academic research.As odd as it sounds, apparently the athletic alignment actually drives academic collaboration as well. And it was thought that BYU doesn't add a lot there, unless you're interested in research that supports the idea that the Native Americans are descendants of ancient Israelites or that Christ spent some time in North America.

From time to time, particularly at expansion time, you hear presidents announce some kind of program for intra-conference research collaboration. So I am sure they exist.

FWIW, Stanford and Cal have a combined MD/MPH program, where students get their MD from Stanford (a degree Cal doesn't offer) and their MPH at Cal (a degree Stanford doesn't offer). I'm not sure if that has anything at all to do with the athletic alignment, given that the same joint program exists with UCSF, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

If there's one thing people have learned in Berkeley, it's that you can't put "Cal football" and "Rose Bowl" in the same sentence. The words just don't fit. You'd be better off linking "covered wagons" with "Mars travel." (Bruce Jenkins, Cal '70, SF Chronicle, Nov. 11, 2017)
