Leaving your team in the middle of the year... when is the last time a coach at a major program has done that?Â
My gut thinks maybe this is a medical problem. Hope not, but best wishes to Coach Spurrier.

If it was medical, there should be at least some softening language to head off rumors at the pass...

If coaches can be asked to leave mid-season, why can't they leave voluntarily? Maybe Spurrier has lost his passion for the job. Is it really in anyone's interest to stay on when you know you aren't giving it your all? I think he's doing the right thing, looking out for South Carolina's best interest and his own.

Well, I guess he left just because he felt it was 'best for South Carolina football.'Â
The President asked him why not stay on the rest of the year and just announce this is his last year, and he said the team loses motivation and doesn't play well when that happens.
So he's just going to cut it of clean and fast, and hope SC can start the rebuilding process now.Â

Maryland should drop football? They have Kevin Plank's money behind them (former Terp football special team's captain, founder of Under Armor/multi billionaire, on Maryland's board of trustees). Sounds a bit like Arrillaga or Knight. They are building new football facilities, are in one of the best divisions in college football (tOSU, MSU, PSU, UM) and have a basketball team ranked #1 in some polls. It will be interesting to see what they can pull off. This coaching hire will be very big for them because they can make the job look very appealing.
