Zombie apocalypses certainly appeal to the survivalists leftover from the Y2K craze :) A mindless army of pure evil is a simple antagonist--no need to develop the villain's character or humanize zombies, which are by definition, soulless. Overwhelming odds, resource constraints, and moral dilemmas...the stuff of drama.
