Chris Petersen is wrong and I agree with Kirk Herbstreit - in substance, if not in tone.
The Seattle Times recently had a strong article on this, the gist of which was that Pac-12 games being broadcast during the late window was optimal in terms of maximizing exposure. A few facts:
Pac-12 games on ESPN2 had 72% more viewers in the late window as compared to afternoon windows. Pac-12 games on any carrier rated 12% higher during the evening window as compared to afternoon windows.
Pac-12 games shown during the late window consist of 65% of viewers from the east/central regions as compared to 60% for games shown in the afternoon windows.
The real issue is that college football is king in the south and midwest, and that having a virtual exclusivity in the evening benefits the Pac-12 because Pac-12 games have always had serious trouble competing head to head against SEC and Big-X games.
Regarding H-man voting, it's clear that more voters saw Luck, Gerhart and McCaffrey during evening games than when they played in games that started earlier. The problem is that voters from the south and midwest (and there are lots of them compared to the west region) are voting for "their guys" regardless of the merits, not that they aren't seeing our guys.
We want to believe that our suffering is due simply to lack of exposure because it is less painful than to confront the truth--the heart of football country is simply biased against us and/or biased in favor of their region(s). It is not that they would be fair minded if only they had easier access to see our wonderful players and superb games. No, they just hate us, and (on average) they are not fair minded at all.
Now, I need to ask myself a tough question. Do I give the SEC its due? Am I fair minded about them? I almost never watch their games and I assume they are all corrupt sports machines similar to SC. Is that a fair assumption? Maybe it is, but to be honest I have no real evidence to back it up. It is my own bias.
Who was that dweeby sports talk show host who always pointed out that being a sports fan meant being a fanatic? Fanatics are by definition non objective and biased. Our problem, quite simply, is that the south and midwest has many, many more fanatics than we do, and TV and dollars follow them.

NO, NO! I live in the Heart of Dixie as our Alabama license plates are proud to proclaim. Believe me, the fans of the SEC give the SEC enough worship to compensate for all of America's lack of worshipfulness for SEC football. From one's automobile stopped at a railroad crossing, seemingly endless railroad trains can be seen streaming out of the state, specially modified coal cars overflowing with pure SEC self-worship destined for states that aren't in the SEC. Do not worry, your individual regard or lack of regard is not worth noticing or worrying about.Â
