Game Day/Herbstreit to PAC-12: Suck On It! - Redrum - 10-07-2017

On ESPN Game Day they aired a segment with UDub's coach Petersen noting/complaining about the late games/ late starts for Pac12 games.  Actually complaining about the Huskies not appearing on prime time national broadcasts.  The problem was playing late and no (or inconvenient, or weak) exposure  for the program. As a regular CDT midnight watcher of Stanford,  I feel Petersen's pain.  But Herbstreit just went all Kim Jong Un on those complainers from  UDub/ P12 saying (in essence) get your own channel with with national reach and then you can play and people can see you in prime viewing time. His STFU to us was implied.

Not surprised. At least he admits that the East and the South rule the Mouse. Fair and balanced as always.

So he didn't actually say "suck on it"? I don't have much time for Petersen's whining. I have a lot more sympathy, or antipathy, for the bias in H---man voting which I actually think is a worse situation than people say it is. People (as in high-profile voters who don't see many West Coast games) will more or less admit the time zone and game times is a factor, but what is not often touched on is the regionalism especially among Southeastern H---man voters, many of whom have no intention of casting a vote for somebody outside their region.

Another angle on this is to consider where GameDay goes on aggregate. It's virtually never out west. That's essentially a market-driven reality and I really don't feel ESPN owes anybody some sort of fairness doctrine in the distribution of GameDay sites.

Maybe Mike Slive can be coaxed to come out of retirement and replace Larry Scott. When are the current TV rights up for renewal? Maybe not, he's 77.

The Worldwide Leader in East Coast Bias. Yet another reason to turn them off.

Re: Game Day/Herbstreit to PAC-12: Suck On It! - GoodGrief - 10-07-2017

Yeah, the South and East’s determination to make sure only one of their guys wins the    award is really disgusting.  When they released the ballot numbers, there was a hugely significant number of voters in the Southeast who did not include Toby Gerhart on their ballot at all.  At all. This is the guy who won the Maxwell award for best running back, and they left him off the ballot entirely just make sure that one of their guys won

Same story with McCaffrey. Disgusting. H-man should be revoking ballots but they won't.

On the positive side, one of the ESPN guys put in a vote for game day in Pullman when we play Wazzu....

Well, they will need to find a good guide for their wagon train.  The Palouse can be tricky.

Heard this secondhand, but apparently also (? on GameDay), Pollock supposedly said something along the lines that if UW wants primetime exposure, maybe they should schedule a non-conference opponent that would make ESPN want to play them at primetime. Ouch, but true.  UW-Rutgers, UW-Montana State, and UW-Fresno State is not really going to create much demand.

Screw Herbie. Just go to the very best New Year's game and beat hell out of his Big 14 in the Rose Bowl. Leave the NC to the conferences, states and people who really have only two things, football and the ever disintegrating NASCAR.

That is a very legitimate criticism but it's not relevant to Petersen's point which is how many games are schedule too late to get East Coast eyeballs.  Herbstreit OTOH was way outta line and I hope Pac-12 coaches across the board only give ESPN the minimum required by contract.

Re: Game Day/Herbstreit to PAC-12: Suck On It! - DC 86 - 10-08-2017

Chris Petersen is wrong and I agree with Kirk Herbstreit - in substance, if not in tone.

The Seattle Times recently had a strong article on this, the gist of which was that Pac-12 games being broadcast during the late window was optimal in terms of maximizing exposure. A few facts:

Pac-12 games on ESPN2 had 72% more viewers in the late window as compared to afternoon windows. Pac-12 games on any carrier rated 12% higher during the evening window as compared to afternoon windows.

Pac-12 games shown during the late window consist of 65% of viewers from the east/central regions as compared to 60% for games shown in the afternoon windows.

The real issue is that college football is king in the south and midwest, and that having a virtual exclusivity in the evening benefits the Pac-12 because Pac-12 games have always had serious trouble competing head to head against SEC and Big-X games.

Regarding H-man voting, it's clear that more voters saw Luck, Gerhart and McCaffrey during evening games than when they played in games that started earlier. The problem is that voters from the south and midwest (and there are lots of them compared to the west region) are voting for "their guys" regardless of the merits, not that they aren't seeing our guys.

Wow.  You have made me rethink my views on this.  I'd like to see that article and examine the evidence, but it does make sense.

We want to believe that our suffering is due simply to lack of exposure because it is less painful than to confront the truth--the heart of football country is simply biased against us and/or biased in favor of their region(s).  It is not that they would be fair minded if only they had easier access to see our wonderful players and superb games.  No, they just hate us, and (on average) they are not fair minded at all.

Now, I need to ask myself a tough question.  Do I give the SEC its due?  Am I fair minded about them?  I almost never watch their games and I assume they are all corrupt sports machines similar to SC.  Is that a fair assumption?  Maybe it is, but to be honest I have no real evidence to back it up.  It is my own bias.

Who was that dweeby sports talk show host who always pointed out that being a sports fan meant being a fanatic?  Fanatics are by definition non objective and biased.  Our problem, quite simply, is that the south and midwest has many, many more fanatics than we do, and TV and dollars follow them.

NO, NO!  I live in the Heart of Dixie as our Alabama license plates are proud to proclaim.  Believe me,  the fans of the SEC give the SEC enough worship to compensate for all of America's lack of worshipfulness for SEC football.  From one's automobile stopped at a railroad crossing, seemingly endless railroad trains can be seen streaming out of the state, specially modified coal cars overflowing with pure SEC self-worship destined for states that aren't in the SEC.  Do not worry, your individual regard or lack of regard is not worth noticing or worrying about.

Indeed!  If you look at last night, there were three night games featuring a ranked team (UW vs. Cal, Stanford vs. Utah, and SDSU vs. UNLV).  Shift that to the 4 pm time slot and we would have been up against Alabama vs. Texas A&M, Michigan vs. Michigan State and many others.

Sorry I refuse to lie down and accept the status quo, and I don't believe for one second that voters in the South/Southeast got any kind of good look at Gerhart, Luck, or McCaffrey - maybe because they weren't interested but if you only give them 3 or 4 chances a year to see them the chance that they will even get one look other than 30 seconds on a highlight show are lower.

I applaud Petersen for standing up for the lack of media exposure, and I hope that Pac-12 fans overall will give ESPN a big earful for not only what Herbstreit said, but also for the antics that apparently went on during the game as well (https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/uw-husky-football/trying-to-make-sense-of-espns-spat-with-chris-petersen/). That author is spot on - do you EVER see a sideline reporter pulling out cupcakes during an Alabama or Oklahoma game?

I may be tilting at windmills and my voice may be small, but it doesn't mean I'll stop.
