New Tree

Yeah, I wasn't impressed at the game. I didn't know what to make of it. Now that I know, I'm even less impressed. Is she not clear on how antithetical weeping and mascot are?

Ugh. that could barely be considered a side kick mascot. Between the band sanctions and the this- Give us the REAL TREE!!!Â

I realize each generation has to do their own thing and often (usually) the older generation doesn't like it. Still . . . I hate it. Not just thre tree part, the whole look. What's next? A dead tree to signify the drought? A Joshua Tree? How do you try out to be Tree? Don't you have to, among other things, present at least a conceptual drawing of the costume? Yuck!

I don't want to see it live. I did see it briefly on TV and frankly assumed it was some student messing around not the "real" tree. Is Good Grief the person I see more and more on the Chik- commercials? If so, can we have a professional Tree? No way.

In case you were wondering, in that video clip the band was playing "Flashlight" by Parliament Funkadelic.
IMO, the tree must be based on the mighty Sequoia. The Weeping Willow is not right for the part.

Is (was?) the real Palo Alto a sequoia? If so then fine.Â

Great call on Parliament Funkadelic, Martyup! I was wondering what it was.
I don't know how accurate this Wikipedia entry is, but I thought it was interesting.

The weeping willow is a symbol of mourning etc in many cultures. I think El Palo Alto redwood is the way to go, although I think a palm tree works well also.
That said, lets the kids do their thing. There is a Willow exit off 101 so I guess there is some connection. I appreciate the spirit and effort.

We were in a hotel room in Colorado and I saw the commercial "for real." I started yelling, "Hey, I know that guy!" I think the boyfriend thought I was nuts.

Botany was probably an elective in those days, as it was in my day. Otherwise, we had Indian paraphernalia.

Well, I like this tree better than the various Palm designs over the years. But I agree with others that the tree should look like a conifer. I know we have plenty of palms and they are iconic on Palm drive, BUT palm trees always shriek out SoCal to me. Redwoods are uniquely northern California.
I've noticed over the years that a lot of people who grow up in northern California share my hatred of palm trees, but people who come from other parts of the country, and have not learned to distinguish NorCal from SoCal culture, just think Palm trees are Californian and accept them. And people from southern California would probably chop down El Palo Alto and plant a coconut palm.
So make the tree look like a conifer, and celebrate part of what makes Stanford uniquely Stanford!

El Palo Alto is a coastal redwood, whose scientific name is Sequoia sempervirens . So it is not what people normally call Sequoia. The Sequoia tree is Sequoiadendron giganteum. But both the redwood and the sequoia have the word "sequoia" in their scientific names, so you are not far off.
