ESPN analyst Ed Cunningham chooses Stanford as his most underrated CFB team coming into the season.. and also his sleeper pick for a CFB playoff spot. 

Why? Strong OLine, 5th yr QB, Pac12 North wide open.  He thinks if we enter the Pac12 Champ with 1 loss and beat a USC, we're in.

2. None of our TEs were listed under "players to watch"

Our friend Mr. Wilner has an article claiming that the coaches on the three Bay Area division 1 football teams are all on the hot seat this season. He notes that Shaw isn't likely to lose his job, but does state that, "Another five-loss season, and the skeptics will be out in force."

Is that true?
Basically, the answer seems to be yes.


But the disappointing 8-5 season of 2014 is clearly on the high side of Stanford history over the past 35 years (chosen to roughly match my history of Stanford fandom - of course your time frame will vary).
Over the past 35 years Stanford has had five bowl wins - including the one last year.
Over the past 35 years Stanford has had twelve 8+ win seasons - with four of those Shaw's four years as HC.
In forever, I think there have only been 15 seasons with more than 8 wins.

If Shaw stays at Stanford for awhile and 8-5 is around the lower ebb of his seasons, that would be shockingly good.

Once again I marvel at how the expectations have changed for Stanford football.

In 1978 Bill Walsh finished 8-4 and Stanford fans prayed he would stay around (he of course didn't, as every NFL team was after him).

In 2014 David Shaw went 8-5 and people are suggesting he better not do it again or he will be in real trouble.
