The Pac-12 and its member schools already do a fair amount of Directors' cup promotion. Stanford wins the thing every year, so we know the deal. The UCLA, USC and UCB ADs routinely note their performance. For years the releases have steered away from highlighting Stanford's accomplishments and for similar reasons I think the releases are trying to move away from honoring the very predictable Pac-12 results.
The nod to the SEC is an attempt to get this cup noticed by those that query for SEC news.
It's OK. I think any conference would prefer to have 6 of 12 in the top 25 and sweep the top 3 than have 7 of 14 in the top 25 and only 1 in the top 10.Â
