I got home last night in time to watch the final hole. I've had the Golf Channel on cable/satellite for more than 20 years and this is the first time I ever watched it.

Instead of winning the hole, Stackhouse loses another hole and her opponent is dormie as they stand on the 17th tee! 

Sorry, but every time I hear or read the word dormie I think that the player is (1) living in Stern Hall or some similar edifice, or (2) asleep in France  (or Quebec).

those are correct associations: I believe the term conveys that the match is basically won and one can play the remaining holes in one's sleep.

"Dormie" does not mean you have won, it means that you cannot lose in an 18 hole match (e.g. 2 up with 2 to play).    Of course, if the format of the match play competition is that halved matches must go to sudden death (as at the NCAA's in the case of a team 2.5/2.5 score after 18).  It does come from the french "dormir" just as "caddie comes from the french "cadet."  Scotland was very close to the French in the 16th century when golf was in its nascence, as they had a common enemy, Les Anglais, ou "Perfidious Albion" si vous voulez....

Yes, I understand, that's why I said "basically" won. If you had in fact won, the match would be over at that point. The point is that you can "sleepwalk" through the last holes and still win. (though you really can't totally sleepwalk it, got to at least tie one hole to win)

Nancy, I think they mean that these 9 schools are the only ones to win men's and women's golf in any year, not in the same year.  But I hope we send the journalists to the record books to look up which schools have won in the same year.  :)

Nine seems far too low to me. From the top of my head:


- Stanford many sports (tennis, water polo, swimming, golf, basketball, volleyball)
- UConn basketball
- UNC soccer
- USC many sports (tennis, water polo, track, swimming, volleyball)
- Georgia tennis
- UCLA many sports (track, soccer, swimming, tennis, water polo, volleyball)


I'm sure there's more.
