There is a big uptick this year.

I think that is partly because the no-sit-out for grad school rule is starting to be more broadly known, and I also believe that they made the process easier by no longer requiring that the "transfer" student enroll in a graduate program that the original school does not offer.

I am under the impression that the coaching staff is trying to help students slated to graduate, but not slated to play (much) next year,  find a new home. If so, this would be a major reason for more such transfers.

My rough guess is that only about three of the grad transfers would be back with the team next year without the rule (Lyons, Skov, Young).

Stanford has been running below the scholarship limits for some time, so one could argue that they might want to start recruiting bigger classes regardless. An additional attrition of ~3 per year might make that more imperative.

I don't think Hopkins or Reihner had the option to return to Stanford for a 5th year, based on what I've read elsewhere. I'm glad they were able to find good opportunities elsewhere.

Crower and Young would not have been expected to get much playing time if they had returned to Stanford. Young has transferred to Boise St. I assume Crower will find another option.

Lyons and Skov would have played regularly, quite possibly been starters. Both probably would have shared time in the rotation with younger players. Lyons was demoted from his starting position last year, which may have affected his enthusiasm for returning to play for Coach Akina. Also his mom just got a job at Michigan. Skov got an opportunity to transfer to one of the few programs in which the fullback is a featured ball-carrier. He will get more carries in a game at Georgia Tech than he would have had in a season at Stanford. And GT accepted him to its MBA program. Good opportunity for him.

Take a look sometime at the list of schools that have abysmal grad rates.  It's depressing.  It's maybe hundreds of kids each year that leave without football in their future or a marketable degree (or any degree).  Meanwhile Stanford is graduating kids with degrees and a chance in many cases to pay for a year of grad school by playing football in situations where they might see the field more than at Stanford.  That seems like a program discriminator  worth keeping in recruits' consciousness.  Won't have much traction with a lot of HS players trying to make a college decision, but it's visible,demonstrable evidence of how a Stanford degree can help beyond the normal college playing career. It might be a persuasive factoid (among others) with the type of student who considers Stanford.
