With 2015 in the book, I thought I would revive the WBB recruiting thread just for 2016.  Here is the 2016 Recruiting information so far, somewhat updated.  Some of this is from Bob, mostly from Google.  If you have other names that you hear we might be interested in, or additional details on these kids, chime in.

A 5'7" guard, ESPN's no. 14.  Committed to us some time ago.  The sister of Russel Wilson.  Compelling story.

A 6'4" sophomore from Texas and ESPN's choice as no.  1.  We are recruiting her, but so is everyone.  Rumors that she wants to stay in Texas.  3.5 gpa.

Impact interior producer and the elite post player in 2016; accomplished finisher in the paint, utilizes either hand to complete the play; trails the break, extends the defense with range to the arc; superb talent who impacts at the next level. (Olson)

It would be nice to welcome another #1 recruit from Texas!  She will get lots of other attention, though.  Apparently her defense is amazing.

A 6'0" sophomore from Texas and ESPN 20, is reputed to be a good student too, although one article said “all A’s and B’s.”  She and Cox just made the U17 team.  She lists Stanford as one of 13 schools she is interested in.

A 5'11" guard from Walnut Creek, has achieved national recognition by racking up many honors.  She made the U16 team and just last month made the U17 team--she was first alternate and was called when another player became ill.  She is known for three point shooting and terrific defense.  Stanford is one of two dozen colleges expressing interest, including UConn.  3.4 gpa.

Comparison with Candice Wiggins, who is her idol.  Carries a 4.34 gpa.  Stanford was her dream school a couple of years ago.  She says she now wants to play somewhere which features a run n gun offense, so perhaps our recent change will be appealing to her.

6-3 Post Bakersfield CA, # 24 PN  Travel Team: Cal_Sparks

West plays for a private Catholic school in Bakersfield and on C.a.l Sparks, and I think (from the interviews) on the US U16.  Ranked 24 on Prospects Nation.  She seems quite articulate.  One sister is a varsity player at SJSU, the other played for CSU Bakersfield.  She is a natural 5 but has been learning how to play at the 4.  Hard to know how she is doing scholastically, but she does say in the video that she loves the Catholic school experience and would be there even without the basketball.  Garces is a college-prep school.  Would be good to keep an eye on her.  I imagine that Erica McCall played against her when Erica was a senior and CJ was a frosh--Erica went to Ridgeview across town.

Kat Tudor.

5-10 G CA    #  54 PN  Travel Team:  Cal_Stars Elite

Fundamental perimeter performer displays smooth stroke in stationary game to the arc; reads spacing, offers cerebral approach; stretches the defense, shooter. Interest from USC, Nebraska, Iowa St, Iowa, Washington, Arizona St, Oregon and Oregon St.  Has visited Iowa State where her pure-shooting skills would be welcome in Fennelly’s system. We are apparently not on the list, but Bob likes her!

Mark Lewis of Blue Star Media wrote that Tudor is “active both with and without the ball in her hands. She’s got a good understanding of spacing and is one of those rare players on the high school level who grasps the value of aggressive cutting. Her reads and shot selection are strong and the release is quick.”

Sierra Campisano

A 6'4" forward out of San Diego (Torrey Pines High School) with a 3.8 gpa "Honors Curriculum".  She has quite the website with many highlights and biographical material here:

It is early to be calculating GPA--they don't even have first semester grades for their Junior year yet.  The scattered references you get in the press might be based on grades for just one or two freshman semesters, for example.  Four of the 9 we are watching I have not found any specific GPA references in the press--including on Anna Wilson, who is a commit--one of those 4 might turn out to be a 4.0 student.  But of the remaining 5 I don't think any are going to hit the very high academic bar set by all three of our 2014 class, with all three being 4.0 gpa as well as being Gatorade state players-of-the-year.  Campisano looks very promising with a 3.8.

It is odd to say, but from the perspective of fans watching the recruiting process, we actually can know a lot more about the basketball skills of recruits than we can ever know about their academic performance--since academic performance is private and basketball performance is public.  How many points they score in a high school basketball game is easily accessed, how many points they score on their AP US History final is not.  This is, of course, how it should be.  For us to have a guess as to whether a student might be able to come to Stanford, the students have to choose to publicize their academic performance, by mentioning it to a reporter or putting it up on the web (like Campisano does) or accepting an award that mentions their academics.  And so that often leaves Stanford fans us in the dark compared with fans at less academically selective academic institutions.

Just read an article in max preps from 2 years ago about the Carrington family building an athletic "dynasty" which mentioned her as a ninth grader seeing Stanford as her dream school and her idol as Candice Wiggins. Also says CW referred to Carrington as the "Little Maya Moore." Sounds like she is the real deal,

It is always possible that Cox just forgot--it must be hard to keep track of more than a dozen schools.  Although it says she had to consult her cell phone to recite the list.  But I find it odd that UCLA was listed as the token Pac-12 school.  They do seem to be recruiting very well there--and I am not sure why.  Cori Close has a much thinner resume than Graves does, for example.  Oh, and Oregon beating UCLA last week has got to raise a few questions too about what these two coaches are able to do with their respective talent pools.

Speaking of Graves, I think we are beginning to see the results of Oregon hiring Graves away from Gonzaga.  The article says that we made an offer to Campisano before she chose Oregon, but she said that Oregon had always been her top choice.  Well, there is a lot behind the scenes about academics that we do not know--keeping in mind that an offer and admission--or even an offer and turning in an application--are separate questions. 

I do think that the caliber of talent in the rest of the Pac-12 is significantly elevating.  It is something Tara and others have always said we wanted, to get the Pac 12 to the point where it is taken seriously as a league in WBB.  Well, we got what we wanted.

I found a tweet that indicated that Finalists for Aislinn Konig included Arizona, Kansas, Louisville, NC State, Oregon, USC, Stanford, Washington.  The UDub site has a lot of information and interest in her--their fans know her well since she has played in Washington. 

Here is a nice article on her.  A daughter of a coach, both parents played point guards.  She is a 5'11" guard.    Scored 30 points a game--in eighth grade.  In order to get exposure in the US she played on a team in Washington State as a 9th grader out of position (as a center!) and made all-region.  She became the most highly recruited guard in the history of British Columbia--as a sophomore.

"Aislinn Konig is a defenders worst nightmare.  The 2016 combo from the BC Elite challenges defenders of both size and quickness.  With good size at 5-10, she creates effectively off the dribble with a very focused awareness of her match up and how to attack their footwork.  She uses an impressive hesitation move that is followed with the kind of acceleration that leads to deep penetration into the paint.  Konig can finish at the rim but calls on a soft touch floater as well.  The form is there from the perimeter as well as the range to keep the opposition honest.  She did struggle with some face guarding which in turn led to some forced shots but the willingness to give it up is also there and serves her well when pressured."

And if you think the best players can’t also have the best grades, Konig will immediately prove you wrong.

“We were sitting in the office one day and Yale called,” Brown said of the prestigious Ivy League school. “The coach that called asked if she was interested in going to the most prestigious university in the world, so I turned to Ace and I said ‘Hey are you interested in going there?’ She said thanks, but she had other plans. I mean, you’re turning down Yale. I can’t even relate to all of this.”

Even though she still has another full year of high school remaining, her decision will be made sooner than later.

She says she will be traveling the country to visit the schools on her list--I don't know the timing, but I would guess it would have to be after her high school season ends.  Given her academics, spring break?  Early summer?  In any case, it is nice to have another excellent prospect on our list of potentials.
