Oregon is on the way to becoming our next challenger, which is exactly what everyone expected when Kelley Graves left Gonzaga to go there.  It is becoming the next Gonzaga.  I still think we will have the edge in personnel and in recruiting, but our conference is becoming more competitive.  At least Graves seems to be a good guy who gets along well with Tara.

Brewer from North of the border came as a surprise. She seems to have a little more size and international experience vs Pivec. From what I've watched of her, her game may be very similar to Karlie (ability to shoot beyond the arc) and Brittany (hussle player who doesn't mind doing some dirty work). With that said, another observation is that she may not have the combo guard skill we're used to seeing with Lili, Briana and even Jeanette a few years back, as she seems to dribble too high (she had a few turnovers trying to bring the ball up) and Canada's performance overall in the FIBA tournament was not the greatest (not sure how many games Brewer started).

Let's hope we went with the right Mikayla/Mikaela. This video just released of Pivec and I have to admit she looks good. Doesn't shy away from contact. Has a scoring guard mentality and the dribble to ge to the rim. Can shoot the 3 + some midrange game.

Umm, short of breaking the UConn monopoly and winning national championships, there's not much beyond 6 Final Fours in the last 9 years and a near-lock on Pac-12 championships that Tara can do more of on the court to entice top recruits.  We've already hashed this on other threads, so no need to go over it again, but we have to deal with what we have (which isn't bad)

Not at all. My notes were merely observations as Tara and the rest of the coaching staff are expert evaluators and have both found plenty of under the radar talent and developed them (e.g. kokenis pre-retirement, Lili, etc.).

I think Tara is one of the best coaches to ever coach college WBB. She really runs with what is given to her with an extremely limited talent pool (to pass through admissions). Not only should her track record and coaching ability attract top talent but the appeal of living in California + an incredible degree makes Stanford ahard choice to decline. However, i can't help but wonder how the lack of recent championships has done to deter top (and seemingly qualified) players to the farm.  Take the youngest Samuelson sister as an example. Id go out on a limb and say a factor to her moving cross country to Storrs was the liklihood of her coming out of college with at least 1 national championship before graduating college. I believe had Tara won a championship in the last decade, the 2010 game comes first to mind, we'd possibly have more players coming to Stanford to play for a HOF coach, get a top notch degree, live in one of the most desired locations, AND would have a chance of playing for and winning a national championship.

I look at Notre Dame and how they've been able to attract top the last 6 years or so. I think those players go in thinking theyre getting a great education AND possibly win a national championship (despite coming up short the last few years) whereas coming to Stanford almost seems like you have to pick one or the other...

Over the past 4-5 years, schools whose combined postseason record over the last few years don't equal ours (Nebraska, Texas, Ohio State, UCLA, Georgia Tech, etc.) have had Top 10 recruits come to their program.

In this year's ESPN's Top 20 Recruiting Classes, we are ranked #17.  Over the last 8 years, we have had as many Final Fours (6) than 14 of those schools combined during that same time period.

However, beyond N.D. and UConn, there has not been a more successful program in the last few years than ours and though we do lose recruits to N.D. (even though I seem to remember Tara mentioning before this spring's Sweet 16 game that we don't compete with them over the same recruits or am I misremembering?...), that doesn't explain why it doesn't seem there's not widespread interest in attending Stanford or that we lose recruits to Duke or other less successful programs.  When you hear of prospects considering colleges, we seldom make even the long list of schools they are considering.  We are not even in the conversation.

And this is largely the pattern for the last few years with only an exception or two (Katie Lou).

I think Duke gets recruits over us - DESPITE inferior coaching and results - for two reasons: (1) proximity (for East Coast kids whose parents don't want them going to CA for school) and (2) relaxed admissions standards for WBB. But I'm still amazed how often top kids go there, though I suspect some who just can't be admitted to Stanford but still have their #1 priority as academics (but are top 20 ranked) opt for Duke. Yes, it also appears Notre Dame gets some (Skylar Diggins several years back was supposedly admitted to Stanford; more recently Brianna Turner and Erin Boley, though not sure of admissions).

N.D. has been the runner-up in 4 of the last 5 national title games and our title game appearances were in 2008 and 2010 (losses to Tennessee and Connecticut), so in that respect, they have been "closer" to winning the title, though some of those games were blowouts (19 point loss to Baylor in 2012 and 21 point loss to UConn in 2014)

However, beyond N.D. and UConn, there has not been a more successful program in the last few years than ours and though we do lose recruits to N.D. (even though I seem to remember Tara mentioning before this spring's Sweet 16 game that we don't compete with them over the same recruits or am I misremembering?...), that doesn't explain why it doesn't seem there's not widespread interest in attending Stanford or that we lose recruits to Duke or other less successful programs.  When you hear of prospects considering colleges, we seldom make even the long list of schools they are considering.  We are not even in the conversation.

When 81alum or others make their list (like for the Class of 2017 prospects), we don't even have any Top-20 recruits on the radar a YEAR out and early on in the recruiting process, what does that tell you? And this is largely the pattern for the last few years with only an exception or two (Katie Lou).

I think Duke gets recruits over us - DESPITE inferior coaching and results - for two reasons: (1) proximity (for East Coast kids whose parents don't want them going to CA for school) and (2) relaxed admissions standards for WBB. But I'm still amazed how often top kids go there, though I suspect some who just can't be admitted to Stanford but still have their #1 priority as academics (but are top 20 ranked) opt for Duke. Boley committed long before she could have received an App.  Diggins and Katie Lou admitted. The last player accepted who went to Duke was maybe 7 years ago.   

Of course their are many we would love to recruit and they would love to come to Stanford but academics are in the way and then there are those who don't want to come who might well have been accepted.
