Here's the key statement from the Ca.l article ...
Quote:Williams (Ca.l interim AD) said Ca.l had some leaders, both vocally and athletically, in the locker room that did not have a commitment to academics. This carried over to other players.
Youre either going to have the culture that you want or the culture that you let develop, Williams said. We were letting the culture develop that wasnt the culture we wanted.
In other words if your team leaders model an anti-intellectual/anti-academic locker room culture then you too can have the worst graduation rate in the FBS. The "brand" at Stanford is centered around "Nerd Nation", "Intellectual Brutality" and Andrew Luck exceling at both football and mechanical engineering/architecture. Where's his counterpart among the leaders at Berkeley?Â
There will always be a few Ca.l fans who prefer to tear down Stanford rather than fix their own school - this kind of dichotomy where worst and first are 80 miles and light years apart has to hurt - but I suspect the calmer heads are taking a close look at Stanford's success and trying to figure out what part might fit at Berkeley and how the Berkeley brand can be changed.Â
Good luck to them - changing culture is HARD.
