Sometimes visual graphic designers go down Alice's rabbit hole when trying to make things simpler or more comprehensible. This seems like one of those times. Sometimes a simple table is much more instructive and easy to understand. List the color combinations ). Then list the number of teams with each color combination. Then rank them by # of schools. Voila!
P.S. I am a hopeless graphic learner. I walk around my RF/radio tech company and when trying to understand something I always say, "Draw it for me". Same deal when I'm trying to explain. Can hardly communicate ideas without a drawing instrument in my hand. It's just this particular one was so busy that it fell on the declining backside of information transfer curve.
