Fantastic and I am very happy for JMart. He deserves to be with a team full of professionals close to his alma mater.
Way to go Niners.
But I must say I deplore ESPN articles for the type of nasty comment banter they always seems to generate. I sincerely wish for Jonathan to prove his critics wrong and find solid footing for a long lived career in the NFL.Â

Since the Niners are set on the OL, Martin will not be a starter unless someone goes down. My question is does he potentially play Guard, and also be the 6th OL in jumbo sets?
If he's the top back-up OL, and plays as the 6th OL he'll get enought PT to put his game on video so he can potentially use the Niners as a stepping stone to a starting job somewhere. Then again, the 6th OL can be pretty valuable, so maybe he'll carve out a niche for himself there.

Great for Martin. A lot of people wrote off his NFL career following the scandal. It's a long way from now to getting live game snaps, but this is a great opportunity. I think Harbaugh will help set the right tone in the locker room. And to upgrade from the Dolphins to the 49ers has got to be a player's dream, right? A perennially also-ran to a three-time NFC Championship game participant? Winning solves a lot of locker room problems in itself.

6th OL on a team that will likely contend for a Super Bowl is the same as being a starter on half the teams in the NFL.

Don't forget that Roman was also his position coach at Stanford in 2009 and 2010. Should be as comfortable as it can get for Martin right now.

He has to make the roster, first, which will be no easy task.
A lurker here shared with me a conspiracy theory he had seen, along the following lines:
Goodell told the 'Niners to trade for Martin and then cut him (he has no chance of making any NFL roster).
Then, when the inevitable lawsuit from Martin's camp comes, the Dolphins/NFL can say "We did not cause any harm to MMart - heck even his own college coaches cut him from an NFL roster."Â At minimum, will help in settlement discussions.
Man, talk about a cynical outlook. I'm one of Goodell's/NFL's biggest detractors (certainly if pool is "sports fans"), but even I don't think that Goodell would direct that (or that the 'Niners would go along with it).
Good luck to Jonathan Martin. It's a helluva good team to be on . . . if you can make the roster.

What would the Niners get from participating in such a conspiracy?Â
Sounds pretty silly to me. And it totally discounts the potential impact on production of any "I will show them" motivation that Martin more than likely has driving him now.

The downside for the Niners would be massive, and there's no upside. Why would they do such a thing?

What downside to the 'Niners? They got him for a conditional 7th round draft pick (meaning they lose nothing if he is cut). [I presume you mean the downside is if the kooky conspiracy theory is somehow revealed as "the truth." But if that's the case, the NFL has a lot more to worry about than how the 'Niners would be impacted by this.
As for upside? I agree there is not much . . . well, other than being in the good graces of Roger Goodell. Who knows how much that might come in handy down the road.
Look, I said I didn't believe it - was just relaying a cynical conspiracy theory someone offered.

Right, that's what I'd meant Teejers...not losing the 7th round pick, but being identified as part of the conspiracy, such as it was. And actually, now that I think about it, I wonder what the Martin pickup says about Harbaugh/Baalke relations?

One would have to guess Harbaugh and Baalke had to agree on this Martin move. And one would have to further assume it was Harbaugh's idea more than Baalke's.
Niners get a guy who was a second round pick two years ago, for a seventh. Sure Martin struggled a bit early in his career, but so too did Niners RT Anthony Davis. He didn't come into his own for a couple years. It's way too early to write off Martin.

Martin was thrown into a starting NFL tackle position on day 1 on a marginal team. I don't know that it is a recipe for immediate success. I think Davis struggled his first year or two.
