I know every Under Stanford Control person thinks Under Stanford Control is the great place to be, but their opinions are exactly why I think it is a bad place for a coach with real potential. Nothing but downside there, go anywhere else unless you really, really, really need the $$$.
Huh? SC is one of the best jobs in the country. Yeah, sure, you have demanding fans but you'll have demanding fans in any place that's worth being. Given the amount of talent, history and cash the program commands, it's a great job.

It will be a great job in 2016. 2014 and 2015 will be brutal. A good HC will not want those losses on their resume. The next coach will be fired for failing to win, best to wait for the roster to be closer to full force.
The 2014 class only has 5 solid verbals right now and no 5-stars. The 5-stars will not be coming with all of this uncertainty. So this impossibly small 2014 class with few blue chippers will not replace all of the departures. 2013's challenge is a short roster. 2014 will be much harder. That is why it is not a good job for an high profile coach expecting to win day #1. Texas will be better for those types.
2015 will be a chance for a coach to load up, but after 3 bad seasons UCLA will get the better 2015 LA recruits. It is highly doubtful the 2015 class will feature 25 5-star recruits. Worse yet, those 2015 recruits will need to play as true freshman in 2015 because the roster will be so depleted. The Under Stanford Control fans will be screaming that the HC can't coach the talent, that the talent is not prepared for success, etc. (Think Walsh II when he had his high potential frosh playing and making obvious mistakes) Best for a real winner to come in for the 2016 season.
Under Stanford Control will be a good job, but 2014 will be a very bad year to start with the program.

Are things in fantastic shape? No. If they were, the job wouldn't be open. The question isn't: what's going on right now, but what can I turn it into? As we know from Carroll and even from Kiff in 2011, the amount of talent SC can amass is formidable.
Of course, you might ask, how likely am I to take it there? The cupboard is far from bare; there just aren't enough silverware there. But the pieces that are there are poorly coached; that augurs well if I think I'm a good coach (which I think I am, seeing as I'm being contacted by U.S.C.) I get to coach Nelson Agholor, Su'a Cravens, Tre Madden, Leonard Williams. Max Browne was the #1 QB recruit in the country... There are things to work with here.
UCLA? I'm worried about them? This should be near the high-water mark for Bruin recruiting and they've got 9 commits and are ranked 57th in the country, with a class that is entirely composed of wideouts and defensive backs. A challenge, sure, but far from highly concerning. Far as I can tell, kids will be rushing into the school because I'm not Lane K. (Interviews with recruits had a lot of comments like, "SC's my dream school.")
Is U.S.C. flighty or quick to fire coaches? Not as far as I can tell. My predecessor got four chances at it despite being grossly underqualified for the job. Hell, people were defending Lane and some even picked 'em as a top ten team before the season began. I'm probably not as much of a jerk as he is, so I feel good about currying goodwill.
So I think this looks like a fantastic job. Texas is probably better, but I like SC a lot.
