The latest reports are saying that Haden would not let him back on the bus. Kiffin had to find another ride.
As for the mid season firing being a bad thing for Stanford, I'm not so sure. Consider:
It will be much more difficult for USC to win games this year. The interim coach and assistants are going to be more concerned about finding another job than anything else. At best, they will make it to another low tier bowl. Stanford has a chance to put the all time worst defeat on them this year.
Recruiting will take a big hit this year at USC. It is going to be nothing but bad press for them for some time.
It will take at least two years for them to recover from the effects of the sanctions. Who ever takes over has an uphill battle. Everyone in coaching recognizes this. The rabid USC fans don't see it this way though. They want a savior now, they are willing to pay for it, and they expect to get it. The last thing they want to hear is that it will take time to return to the program to glory? What they are likely to get is someone who will promise the world in order to get a good retirement -- someone like Kiffin!
UCLA is on the rise. It is very likely that USC and UCLA will share the high profile recruits that want to stay in LA for some time.
