I just came across this article in an Oregon newspaper about Jaime Nared, a five star recruit in the 2014 class, and a close friend and teammate of Stanford's incoming freshman Kailee Johnson.  She is being recruited heavily by just about everybody.  Three things suggest we might have a chance--1) the fact that she has not already decided means she is keeping her options open, 2) her friend Kailee (although she has two friends/teammates going to Tennessee, too), and 3) she mentions "good academics."

I'm still just taking my time, just learning about schools," Nared said. "I want to be in a fun place with good academics. I think once I go and take visits, I'll know where I want to be. By the end of summer, I'll probably have it down to a top five, but not now.

I don't have information on whether Tara has been recruiting her, but we have done so well lately with Oregon players that I would think she would be a logical recruit and surely a welcome addition.

I don't remember the department in the 1970s when I was a student, but their webpage says the department was founded in the 1950s.

Yup - The Comm department has been around for a while.

I took an Organizational Communication class in the Communications department from Everett Rogers in the 80s.  Rogers later got credit for mapping the diffusion of innovations and coining terms such as "Early Adopters" that are now a common part of the Silicon Valley lexicon.

I remember how excited he was about the emerging silicon valley corporate culture.  I remember being highly amused when he was looking at how organizational research was done in the past and how that would soon all be up ended.  In those days Journals and Published papers used methodologies such as tracking paper memos and interoffice envelopes to see who communicated with whom in American corporations.  Yup, you heard right - TRACKING PAPER MEMOS and INTEROFFICE ENVELOPES!  Hah - That game was over.

We are recruiting Nared along with others.  And we have athletes majoring in Communications or what ever it's called.  Somehow they found a way. 

I just returned from The End of Trial in Oregon with 2200 players.  Our coaches were certainly watching Nared.  And have for years. 

This was my 7th EOT and its great watching so many outstanding players and  who Amy and Tara are watching.

Since we're being particular here, I believe the original quote suggested that "Nared... is interested in studying communications".  I suspect that they do study communications (plural) in our Department of Communication.  As perhaps the least linguistically-skilled participant on this board, is it possible that I've caught Yvonne in Non Sequitur Land?  :D

I can't speak for the Stanford program in particular, but Comm Studies increasingly views itself as a social science, and like psychology, sociology etc. employs statistics to analyze human behavior.  Many of the scholarly articles in the discipline are quite quantitative in nature.  See, for example, the many books and articles by comm studies people analyzing internet behavior.

Almost all of the "fuzzy" subjects are becoming more quantitative, though then again my history degree didn't require statistics. (I do remember a surprising number of statistical debates in various courses.)

More programs should do that.  So many news stories badly misuse statistics.  And I can't tell you how much I appreciate the reporters who do understand basic statistics; that makes it vastly easier to explain anything quantitative to them.

When I was in school, one of the professors whose name escapes me studied communication and children. They actually perceive information on television differently than adults. A few years later, the same professor was involved in developing a rating system for video games.
