The Scout ratings for 2015 are out, and while Rosen is a bit below Town, it's not very far and he is still the #2 QB mentioned and in the top 15 prospects for the nation.

It would be interesting to know where the staff feels he is lacking, since given the offer to Town, they are definitely interested in a QB for this class.

I think that's the general consensus. His freshman grades apparently weren't great, but thankfully Stanford ignores them for admissions purposes. Also I hear that he didn't do any of the summer camp circuit in order to focus on grades and do some summer courses, which makes it sound like he's doing everything he can to get into Stanford.

Absolutely true.  But boy what a difference a decade makes.  We are getting elite class of 2015 players to commit early and are looking strong with respect to several other players in that class.  I have only followed Stanford football for 25 years but the depth of athletes we are getting now is like nothing I have ever seen.

IIRC Walsh II did pull a couple recruiting classes ranked in the Top 10 that benefited the Stanford Women's Golf Volunteer Assistant.  We were not privy to the same amount of information then as now, and the newer vintage Stanford players have exceeded those classes in accomplishment.  I'm sure a lot of that has to do with vastly superior coaching.  Perhaps the potential of the Walsh II recruits were on par or superior to the Harbaugh-Shaw recruits, and they underachieved due to poor coaching, a logical inference considering SWGVA's poor record post-Stanford.

I know this is probably heresy on this board, but I do give SWGVA a few props for, in his first two years as a head coach, taking a team that had  two losing seasons in a row to consecutive bowl games. JH probably didn't inherit the same amount of talent, but it took him three years to get us to a bowl game. SWGVA did a pretty decent coaching job at Stanford while he was here, at least IMHO. Why he fell flat on his face subsequently, I'm not really sure.

(Go back, look at the scores, and then ponder what our record would have been if Eric Abrams' kicking had not gone inexplicably into the tank.) He was sick and tired of college ball.  Bill Walsh I  had a chip the size of the Stanford campus on his shoulder when he coached us in the 70's.  He had something to prove to the NFL and college ball was his vehicle for it.  Walsh II was the regime of a guy who retired on top in the NFL and really had nothing to prove and nothing more to win.  He figured his role at Stanford was an opportunity to be a mentor to a group of young coaches and he made the mistake of investing emotionally in guys he liked as people and former players.  Some of his picks as college coaches were failures even at the college level.  Others got his imprimatur, to the regret of those who figured Walsh would be as good at mentoring as he was at running an offense.

And, he hated recruiting.  When you have won Super Bowls,  sucking up to high school players was distasteful.  Worse, it showed.  Bill Walsh finally got what he wanted at Stanford.  An office on campus, around football and a chance to be an honored emeritus whose door was always open to people who wanted to drop by and talk about the higher aspects of football strategy.  I remember him showing up--as sick as he was-- for Harbaugh's introduction to the press and the Stanford community.  I like to think that he felt that finally he was associated with a program that would go somewhere.  Just showing up was a gift of sorts from Bill Walsh.
