A few days ago, Steve Alford signed a new 10 year contract with New Mexico. So much for loyalty and undying love. :-[
Best evidence yet, given the timing of events, that these long-term extensions are, essentially, meaningless. Perhaps they are useful symbolically to try to assure fans who don't know any better that the coach is really in love with the program and wants to stay. Or maybe they are useful as bargaining chips for the coaches who can perhaps use them to drive a harder bargain in negotiations for programs that really want them. But they certainly don't mean anything about the coach's actual commitment to the program.

The only thing that matters is the size of the buyout.Â
