Never knew this about Greg Roman.  Dunno where I got it, but I formed the impression when he was on Stanford's staff that Roman was just another overweight offensive scheme brainiac who spent all his time thinking up wrinkles and clever plays.  Figured he'd be a terrible head coach because he was more in love with theoretical football and not a guy who could motivate.
Nothing could be more untrue.  Complete opposite.  Great life story, as this piece from the Press Democrat brings out.  Hope he's happy w/ the Niners and won't be seduced by K.al.  I'd hate to compromise my antipathy for the B.ears by liking their head coach.

Were Roman to go to k.al, their major men's sports coaches would be: Roman/football, M.onty/basketball, and, Esquer/baseball... Love the coach, hate the team, I guess, but it's hard not to crack at least a small, wry smile at the irony of the "if we can't beat them, we'll hire their coaches" thinking that would signify across the Bay...

Kal would be stupid not to take a hard look at Roman.

His success at the 49ers (as well as at Stanford) would lead to some serious Bay Area buzz among knowledgeable fans if he does indeed get the job.

And, he'd likely not be a break-the-bank hire.

From what I've seen, Barebackers don't think he has the charisma to be a great recruiter. They look at Roman as an X's and O's geek, but not a CEO personality.

Petersen is the only guy I really fear they'll manage to hire.  First, because he seems to be a very competent, creative game day coach.  But the worst effect of a Petersen hiring, for us,  would be an immediate bump, maybe a leap, in their recruiting that would be felt throughout the Pac-12.  With his mentor,  former UCDavis icon Jim Sochor,  saying he thinks it might happen and obviously counseling Petersen about the positives of a jump to K.al,  those bastards might just pull it off.

Petersen I would absolutely fear. But we do this every year (speculate Petersen will leave), and every year after Pete sticks in Boise, we tell ourselves that we won't fall for the Petersen-to-Random-Job-X rumor again. Then we fall for it all over again. I'll believe it when I see it.

Do schools or NFL teams have to reimburse a school the remainder of a coach's contract?

According to this ESPN article, Petersen's contract is for $2 million per year until 2017. I could see the NFL and some SEC schools buying that out, but I can't see many other schools doing it.

The coach is liable for whatever the buyout is. (Typically the hirer pays the coach who pays the school.) Usually it's not a big deal, but RichRod had some trouble moving from WVA to Michigan because West Virginia decided to get ornery.

If I recall correctly, they got "ornery" in the sense that they asked him to satisfy his legally-binding contract, by either coaching the team or paying his buyout.  When he apparently chose the "sue me" approach instead, they really got ornery (particularly after investing millions of dollars in expanding their facilities, at his demand, when he previously threatened to leave if they didn't)! 

Best part of the story is that he somehow got both the AD and President at Michigan to lie on his behalf, in somehow justifying his walk-away defense (I forget the details as to how they thought they could get him out of it)... up until the day before they were both going to be deposed under oath, at which point Michigan agreed to pay the entire buyout on his behalf (using taxpayer money, of course! Whoops -- sorry, I forgot that money isn't fungible to some folks  ;) ).
