This has to jump start recruiting this year and next. I'm sure there are players that regret passing up the opportunity to play with Luck. cough robertwoods. Who would turn down the possibility of playing with the next Andrew Luck with the prospects of accomplishing something even he didn't do? Unless of course Hogan beats them to the punch.

As everyone reading this knows, Andrew Luck is one of the great all-time leaders in football history.  Yes, that sounds a bit hyperbolic, but to me guys with the leadership ability of Luck should all be considered all-time great leaders.  They are pretty few and far between.  It's one thing to have great physical skills OR have great leadership ability, but another thing entirely to have great physical skills AND be a great leader.

Does Chryst have Luck-like leadership ability to go with his great physical skills?  If he does, Luck comparisons are fair and it would be quite reasonable to believe Chryst could be a recruiting magnet.  If he doesn't, it probably makes sense to temper hopes and expectations about Chryst's "Pied Piping" ability.

Another thing to consider...  When Luck came to Stanford the program was very down.  Though Pritchard might have been a strong leader, he didn't come close to Luck in the physical ability department.  Luck kind of had the room to immediately take a leadership role in the program because he was clearly "the man" waiting in the wings as a Frosh on a bad team.  Now, with three straight BCS appearances, and Kevin Hogan poised to be the team leader for a couple more years, will Chryst, or even Burns or Lloyd have the room to develop into the undisputed team leader Andrew Luck was?

Stanford has been on Spain since his junior year.  There are two competing sells:  South Carolina and UNC are all about home and the fun of playing before friends and family.  South Carolina can offer a chance to play in the SEC.  UNC is trying to regroup after a calamity.  Stanford offers something completely different.  It is waaaay far away.  Some kids like that.  It is the top academic choice among the three.  And, it's football program is newly arrived among the elite.  It's offense really showcases OL prowess.  We don't do it with spreads or hurry-up offenses.  We feature big bodies executing an NFL-style offense.

But, it's not for everybody.  Stanford just lost out on a really big, talented DE who opted to stay home in Iowa.  And we were pretty confident, based on his statements, that our academics/football proposition would win out.  Go figure.  So who knows if Spain really is a lock for Stanford?  It will all depend on what Spain wants from his college experience.

It's a great point. I can't say I have any insight into the football prejudices of HS football players in general and those from the southern hotbed in particular. But if the hardcore fans of a traditional SEC power who have BCS hopes (even if they are exaggerated) can respect the thought process that would lead one of their top recruits to pick Stanford over them, that's got to say something for the esteem Stanford has developed in HS football recruiting.

I'm sorry.  Stanford is not the Harvard of the West.  Stanford is Stanford.  Maybe if Harvard had a better engineering program and BCS-bowl winning football program.  Then again they do have a MBB team that makes the Tournament.

I would say we were solidly in the mix for the BCS championship in 2010 and 2011. If not for the Oregon loss in each year, we would have been playing for the crystal ball.

But if some writer on the east coast wants to inflate our credentials by having us play in multiple Rose Bowls, I have no problem with it.
