We probably knew this was coming, but ND has officially ditched Michigan.  ND has to make room for those ACC opponents, and Michigan was always suspected to be on the list to ditch.

Notre Dame's AD clearly values Stanford though.

Wow!  Navy is an easy win for Notre Dame every year, and they almost always play in South Bend.  So that annual contest's value is obvious even discounting the tradition.  SC is very important to ND, sure.  And in that group is a home and home series with Stanford.  Huh?

Have to say, I do not put the Notre Dame rivalry in Stanford's top 3.

I don't know whether Denny Green's posting a trophy on a media guide is an indication of what the current team thinks or feels any more than what John Brodie's coach had relevance to what the 1970-71 Rose Bowl teams thought and felt.

I would think the players love the chance to go into South Bend and get a win in front of all those (delusional) Irish fans. And the band sure has a good time with the school's place in society (or at least they had, before they were muzzled and neutered by the AD.) And like it or not, they fill seats in Stanford Stadium, even on Thanksgiving Saturday, which has got to be more fun than playing in front of a sparse crowd for a game against Oregon St.

Navy is almost always an easy win for the Irish, but they play Navy every year for reasons that go beyond a W, or just 'tradition.'

The series is one of the oldest inter-sectional rivalries and  has endured for decades largely because of a promise made during World War II. ND’s enrollment was severely impacted by the war, to the point of threatening its continued viability. The Navy stepped in and made their campus a major training site, poured considerable resources into the school, and, some might argue, essentially saved it.  As a result, the Irish promised Navy there would always be a spot on their football schedule as long as Navy wanted it.

Navy in turn likes that spot on the Irish schedule despite winning only three times in the past 45 years. (Or something like that.)  It is able to tell recruits they will play ND all four years they are at the Academy – with two trips to N.otre Dame Stadium, and two other games played in a big stadium somewhere like Baltimore, New York, Washington, Florida, or Dublin.  I also read somewhere that the ND/Navy game funds the Academy's entire athletic budget for a year, but I'm not sure I really believe that.

Now if the Irish would just start up a Sprint team there could be serious payback ;D

Yes, this was the tradition that I had in mind when I said tradition.  It seems like NBC spends 90 minutes before the Navy game going on and on  and on about this stuff.  Didn't really want to push through all of the Navy Notre Dame ties, but it seemed clear that if Notre Dame could have only one OOC game it would be Navy for any number of reasons.
