I took a general education course from her back in the 80's: "Physics of Nuclear Weapons". One of our assignments was to calculate the potential effectiveness of the 'Star Wars' missile defense plan, given different numbers of ICBMs launched. sobering.
She was a great instructor and an inspiring human being.

Another woman astronaut, who also flew, lives in our neighborhood and is a member of the neighborhood church. All astronauts are intellectually top notch in their scientific and engineering lives, and exposure to a few of them, including the one living close by, just highlights for me what an extraordinary person Sally Ride was, even among a highly select crowd of extraordinary people. The arc of her life shows she somehow transcended the hoopla around her first-woman status. She really was the real deal.
