I don't doubt your joy is great, as is mine. But I'm certainly not beating my chest or saying this is what we've been waiting to see from Dawkins and the future is ours. This run gives me hope for the future, but it doesn't make me think more positively about the season past or Dawkins' leadership. In fact, I feel like this team is succeeding despite his in-game coaching at times. Some of the player combinations on the court have left me scratching my head.

One of my co-workers is a big Michigan fan - I posed the question to him of whether he would rather have his team be playing in the NIT in Madison Square Garden, or lose to 13-seed Ohio University in the first round of the NCAAs - he replied unequivocally that the NCAAs is always better. I disagree. I've enjoyed this little run.

As I understand it, two of the last four in the CBI tourney were Pac-12 teams [with WSU beating OSU to make it to the finals there] and two of the last four in the NIT are Pac-12 teams [and UW beat Oregon to get there], so, whatever else you can say about the Pac-12 this year, we've got those small ponds covered!

There is no doubt that I would rather have "my" team as the #4 seed in the NCAA than play in the NIT.  That #4 seed implies the team had a pretty good year, and has a decent chance of going to the Sweet 16 or even the Elite 8.  That's much better than getting lucky in the NIT because the team had a mediocre season.

However, I would rather have "my" team go deep into the NIT than lose early as a 12 seed at the NCAA play in game.  The seed would imply their regular season would not be that much better than the NIT level season.  And the deep NIT run could help the team improve for future years.  Losing in the play-in game does not really help much, IMHO.

The upside was better for C.a.l since C.a.l could have won a couple of games, but as it has turned out Stanford's NIT effort has been pretty sweet.
