Here is a solution:  Yang endows Stanford football with a billion dollars, and Rice becomes our next AD.  The football endowment generates more than enough to offset lower TV revenues, and since we are no longer dependent on TV revenues, we can schedule games at reasonable times and build the college experience on campus.  We give football recruits the best educations and also the best of everything else in the nation.  Eventually, we win enough to embarrass FOX and ESPN and the conferences they own.  Then we decide for ourselves whether to remain independent or to become the premiere program in a conference that previously spurned us.

In the early 2000s (as an undergrad) I had a seminar with maybe 10 people in it.  It almost didn't get scheduled for that quarter but at the last second a GSB prof was found to teach it. It was great.  We brought food every week.  

I also took a class which had closer to 30 people in it, but I was the only undergraduate.  Luckily for me, the professor in that one saw it fit to grade me as a class of 1, so I guess you could say that I set the curve =)

We had freshman seminars or sophomore seminars that were designed to be small classes with high faculty interaction.  Those were a pretty awesome experience, although they didn't count for a whole lot in terms of requirements.  The famous Galapagos Islands trip class was an immensely sought-after freshman seminar, iirc.
