Was back in the day late 40's, early 50's when my starting tackle cousin got kicked out for "inappropriate behavior." Continued into the 90's with my niece at her sorority. LSD was the choice of some of my teammates at State but Greenies were plentiful in our field house. The Jesuits at SI smoked liked chimneys and preferred cheap wine and Irish.
Yup. My senior year in HS, a men's magazine listed Santa Clara as the #8 party school in the country because there were no classes on Wednesdays (for quiet, spiritual reflection, of course). The school didn't take that well, nor did they take the fact that the drunken son of a very prominent businessman fell off the top of the gym and died. So, my frosh year, no kegs in the dorms, no drinking in common areas. I remember getting in the elevator with the new school President in the frosh dorm. Loud music on 2nd floor, elevator stops at second floor, half a dozen very drunk frosh pile in. New pres says, icily, "having a little party boys?" And they proceed to assert that was so...the Jesuit got off on the fifth floor, and one of the kids said "I think that was F. Rewak?" Yup, sure was. And boy did he crack down.
As a housewarming gift of sorts, my roommate's father left us with a fifth of just about every hard liquor you could name. His dad was a San Francisco cop, no less, you may have run across him once or twice, Phogge.
The next year, the campus went completely dry, so the students moved the partying to off-campus. That started a Greek movement where there really hadn't been one before.
