It was actually banned after the 1989 season, when a fan died jogging back to his car at halftime to get more beer. Also, reportedly at Big Game that year, the Cal fans were throwing rocks and a fan got the tip of their nose cut off by a thrown beer can.

Then they had to wait at the student entrance so they could be first to claim the seats surrounding the kegs, saving a sufficient number for house brothers. Red Solo cups for all!

Perhaps that's because Marty was the beneficiary of multiple red solo cups full of beer from said kegs! Well played and I miss those days, although '82 was my freshman year.
