Right, Cory Snyder. Big hitter when he came up for Cleveland, struck out a lot. Average went down, split 1991 with the White Sox and Toronto, then went to SF for 1992. Technically a utility player, had 142 more ABs than the "everyday" left fielder. Hit .269, OPS .755. Then, he went to the Dodgers and led the NL in strikeouts.

I think that Robinson belongs in the first group.
We used to play a non league game against McClymonds every year in Oakland. Raymondi Park, skin infield, left field ended in a chain link fence that was the property line of the Projects. Left center about 425', a small patch of grass and a two story apartment house about 500' from the plate. There were some old guys sitting on wooden bleachers behind our bench. One of the Pointer brothers playing for Mack. A couple of our guys were engaged by the geezers and one said that Robbie once hit a ball on the roof of the apartment. Another said that he remembered a Mack outfield of Robbie, Vada Pinson and Curt Flood before Flood transferred (to Tech or Oakland High, I forget). Perhaps the greatest high school outfield ever.
Who knows, maybe the Pointer Sisters were in attendance.

We played at Encinal once. Don’t remember the name of the field.Faced a guy named Encerti but I can’t remember if he pitched for Encinal or Vallejo.
Actually among a couple hundred black background historical interviews shot for MLB was Bill Raimondi. He was one of the “Nine Old Men” including Ernie Lombardi who played on a PCL pennant winning Oaks team in the Forties.

Doesn't seam like your profile accepts PM's. The park at Encinal was on campus. Looked like a practice field with the CF fence stretching in a straight line from foul pole to foul pole. Couldn't have been more than 250' from the plate. Perhaps Washington wasn't available that day. I was starting (sophomore year) and I remember thinking that I needed to pitch way in or way away and let nothing be hit to center.

The baseball field at the school is now called Willie Stargell Field. My son played there in 2016 when Lowell took on Encinal. The field is more conventional now - from my photos, I see it's 325' down the left field line.

As for Encinal…. Both you and UltimateCard are correct. It wasn’t Encinal that played off campus. It was Alameda High (and for good measure, I mixed up the park as well since Alameda played at Lincoln Park on the east side of town). At least I got our (St. Joe’s) home field right…….

Our home field was at Big Rec off Lincoln Way in GGP. Two diamonds, to the west was Graham named after the old owner of the Seals. A pitchers park with little carry. No fences. The other was Nealon, nestled among giant cypress trees with good carry to left and a hill in the deepest part. I once hit a ball that would have rolled forever but it hit the hill on a fly and spun back like a John Rahm 60 degree. Homer turned into a double.
The best kept diamond in the City was Hennessey at Funston Playground (now Moscone) in the Marina. Stands right on top of the field. Intimidating to pitch against SH and Galileo. Faced No Neck Williams one time and shut him down (in a loss). Very tough street fighter, warned not to hit him. LOL.

Other than annual conference games at St. Francis, Bellarmine, Serra and Riordan, we rarely ventured outside Alameda County for games. The three big leaguers I played against in HS were Steve Byre, Bernie Williams, and Chris Speier (and a darn good baseball player who chose football, Dan Pastorini). Williams is the only hitter I ever saw who hit a homer over the right field fence at Washington Park (a very long poke). When the Giants drafted him, I thought he was going to be a star. I guess that shows you why I would have made a terrible scout.

The Giants gave the Reds a choice of Williams or George Foster for Duffy. They chose correctly. No more thoughts here about Duffy please.
I played towards the end of the ripe period of SF major leaguers. The best were No Neck and Frank Bertaina. Many MLB players were opponents in college. Messersmith, Bowa, Spaceman, Bob Boone among them.
At SI in our 1963 AAA championship season we gave Wally Bunker one of his two HS losses. A year later he won 19 games for the Orioles. There used to be a weekly page in the Chronicle devoted to all the semi pro games in the Bay Area in the coming week. Scores of teams, plenty of diamonds. The City Winter League was like the Cape Cod League now. Alas City baseball now sucks.

Bernie Williams was a strong AAA player that didn't rise to the MLB occasion. He played in Japan for six years, somewhat successfully.
I know you were talking about Washington Park in Alameda. For a moment, I thought you were referring to the Washington Park in Santa Clara, a very large park (varsity baseball field for Buchser High School, back when there was a Buchser.). Santa Clara used it for their junior varsity, and in early season tryouts for the SCU team, one of our players hit my best cut fastball about 375 feet on a line, hitting the center field fence on the fly. So much for my budding pitching career.

Norris was 58-59 with a 3.96 career ERA. How about Tyler Walker, 23-18, 34 saves? Debut in 2002? or Marcus Semien, currently leading the AL in plate appearances (and led in 2019 as well). Has 37 HRs this year, had 33 in 2019. Born in SF, went to St. Mary's HS in Berkeley, then UC Berkeley. All star this year, third in MVP voting a few years ago. He was drafted one year after Mark Canha, born in San Jose, went to Bellarmine, also went to UC Berkeley.

Has 37 HRs this year, had 33 in 2019. Born in SF, went to St. Mary's HS in Berkeley, then UC Berkeley. All star this year, third in MVP voting a few years ago. He was drafted one year after Mark Canha, born in San Jose, went to Bellarmine, also went to UC Berkeley.

High Pockets Kelly and Keith Hernandez are also native sons of The City. And, Jerry Coleman. Although he wasn’t born in SF, he attended Lowell and USF.
