Athletic Director Garrett and USC football coach Lane Kiffin showed up a meeting of USC boosters in the Bay Area last night.  Not exactly wallowing in self-pity.   Garrett says it\'s all just "envy" for what USC is.   A whiney Lane Kiffin who figures he earns $4 million a year just for being his sweet self, complained that it was hard to keep track of 120 players and their families.  Not a drop of remorse from them or the USC faithful.

I seriously doubt that the NCAA will reduce the penalties imposed.  All along the way, USC has shown a total lack of remorse regarding the Bush situation, and NCAA inestigators give serious consideration to their sense whether or not an instiution is likely to solve problems from within.  USC\'s arrogance has shone brightly during the investigation and continues to this moment.  Their attitude does not speak well to the possiblity of having theitr appeal seriously considered.  NCAA almost certainly would have considered lesser penalties if any remorse by shcol administrators along the way.  Look at how they have acted:

1.  USC did not self-impose any football penalties, even though it had good reason to expect that their would be penalties.  For example, it could have imposed a loss of 5 scholarships per year and agreed to vacate wins in 2005.  NCAA might have gone further but might have accepted the self-imposed penalties as part of the overall sanctions.
2.  Staff (assistant coach McNair) took no action when it became aware of the Bush cheating.
3.  In its response to allegations, USC took strong issue with virtually every conclusion reached by the investigation committee even when compelling documenation existed.  The excuse in most cases was lack of credibility since key persons had criminal records.  USC was ill-served by its lawyers in this case.  As much as judges like to see remorse at sentencing hearings, the NCAA likes it even more.
4.  Lack of cooperation by USC athletes involved.  The fact that the investigation was long and complex occurred primarily because of lack of cooperation by Bush and the fact that no one in the USC community showed any guts and stepped forward to try to resovle the situation as quickly as possible.
5.  Retaining the assistant coach (McNair) who did not report the Bush cheating when he first learned of it.  One commentator has noted, correctly I think, that it is almost impossible to believe that if McNair knew about the cheating than Carroll also must have known.
6.  Hiring Kiffin, who was on staff when the cheating occurred, and has a record of secondary violations at Tennessee.
7.  Sample\'s letter that does not admit fully to the conclusions reached by the NCAA in the investigation.
8.  USC\'s quick decision to appeal.  Its reasoning is not that it is innocent but that the sanctions are too severe.  Judges and the public have little sympathy for criminals who admit their guilt but say that the crime was not only not their fault and have no remorse.

USC is its worst enemy in this case.  Arrogance often takes one to the top but it also can create a hard fall.

Apparently, according to this numbnuts, it\'s the NCAA, with their stupid little rules. Bush was OK, Petie was OK, even Garrett was pretty much OK...despite the headline of the article. Sample isn\'t mentioned, but I guess that means he\'s OK, too.
