Mike Sanford, Jr., who was an offensive assistant here for one season under Harbaugh (his first season as head coach) and later under Shaw for his first three seasons as head coach, has left Utah State after one year to be P.J. Fleck's OC at Minnesota (actually, he'll be co-OC at Minnesota) after Kirk Ciarroca parlayed this great Gophers' season into the OC job at Penn State. If you recall, Sanford left to become OC at his alma mater, Boise State, where he stayed for one year before two years as Notre Dame's OC, which turned into being head coach at Western Kentucky. He got fired after just his second season, but landed at Utah State as the OC for Gary Andersen.
Sanford is doing well so far on his second climb up the coaching ladder, and could well be a head coach again before long. (He's just 37.) Minnesota's Tanner Morgan is a sophomore and flashed some talent this year, and there's nothing like working with a good QB to make an offensive coordinator look smart.
