That was the late hit on the lineman? As a neutral fan I thought it sounded dubious until I saw the replay, the defensive player had clearly stopped playing when the lineman took him out, so I don't think the line that he couldn't hear the whistle is accurate. Bunz stopping Charles Alexander was a classic.

Bosa and friends were coming full blast at Wilson that whole drive and IIRC only hit him once, after he’d gotten his pass off. The rest of the time they were coyotes missing the roadrunner. The play where he squirted up the middle right between the edge rush was amazing.

I hardly watch any NFL but it seems to me that he and Garoppolo both have really nice touch, as opposed to the classic cannon arm.

I meant the lineman committed the penalty. Obviously from the broadcast it's difficult to tell if someone on the field could hear the whistle, but the DB who he hit late had very clearly let up and was pretty ticked off about the hit, so someone knew the play was over, perhaps because he was watching the action and could see the tackle? Maybe I missed it, but it doesn't look like any of the 49ers on the field were celebrating after the 4th down stop. Imagine today if a team got a goal line stop like that: the entire defense would be running around celebrating for five minutes and doing all kinds of dances in the end zone. Oh, how I miss the 'ole days!

If it was Stanford’s defense, I’d say sure, but the forty niner defense is such that the difference between having to go 73 yards for a touchdown and having to go 30 yards for a touchdown is significant. When Seattle started their drive, the Niners had a 77% chance of winning (per ESPN),  that was down to a 58% probability of winning when Seattle had a first and ten at the SF 47.  After picking up half the distance on a 24 yard pass, Seattle was actually favored to win.  So, figure a first and ten at the thirty outs the odds at 50/50.

I think the math works out in favor of going for it for most fourth down conversion probabilities, but I’m not going to try and solve for the break even point.  The NFL being what it is, though, I bet almost every coach punts in that situation.

So true.  That was my first thought upon hearing about the final score - the game should NOT have had this much on the line for SF (though perhaps Seattle doesn't lay an egg last week if they needed the W to keep this last game meaningful).

BTW, I disagree that we'll see a rematch.  Seattle is vulnerable on the road.  But then again, maybe the 'Niners won't hold up their end of the bargain.  Really hope D.  Ford is back for the playoffs.

Not sure I'd draw that conclusion. Lots of crappy division winners facing off against very good wild card teams certainly have played a role in that stat. Home field certainly plays a role, but there are other factors involved as well.

Not sure I'd draw that conclusion. Lots of crappy division winners facing off against very good wild card teams certainly have played a role in that stat. Home field certainly plays a role, but there are other factors involved as well.

When I saw the replay of the possible PI call in end zone, my immediate thought was the TE initiated the contact and the LB was basically hand fighting with him.

This bring up a beef I have with PI. Receivers are generally allowed to initiate much more contact against defenders than defender are against receivers.

There was a play in Rams Niners game where a Rams WR basically jumped on top of a Niners CB. No PI call. There is no doubting that if the CB did what the WR did he would have been flagged for PI. The double standard is quite annoying.
