[Papa John]

I pass on from my Twitter feed this apropos paraphrase of John Babsone Lane Soule:

"Go young man West, go West!"

Not that I've ever delved deeply into this, but isn't that a Horace Greeley quotation?

It is, but, according to encyclopedia.com, HG borrowed from JBLS.

You are both correct.

"GO WEST, YOUNG MAN, GO WEST" "GO WEST, YOUNG MAN, GO WEST" was an expression first used by John Babsone Lane Soule in the Terre Haute Express in 1851. It appealed to Horace Greeley, who rephrased it slightly in an editorial in the New York Tribune on 13 July 1865: "Go West, young man, and grow up with the country." When the phrase gained popularity, Greeley printed Soule's article to show the source of his inspiration.

Anyone know why Williamson didn't play?  Did we know he was injured? (It might be easier to keep track of our healthy players than our injured ones)

You youngsters on this board may not appreciate the reference.  Jerry Waldvogel was the third string quarterback (behind the Mike Cordova/Guy Benjamin debate) who was a damned good passer.   (He would have started at nearly any other Div I school during that era).   He graduated in 1976, became a biology professor at Clemson, and sadly died in 2009.

However, there's a more recent episode of Stanford going to its third string QB - without a big drop off.  The 1998 Big Game featured a rotation of Todd Husak, Joe Borchard, and Randy Fasani.  It was an unusual strategy by Tyrone, but you had confidence with any one of those three no matter who was behind center.
Sadly, I cannot say the same for last night.
