Costello, Mills, West OH MY! Stanford may be off to see the Wizard.

Does this mean Kelly is starting over Eboh?  Kelly sure had a good game last time out.

Costello has been out a weird amount of time for a banged thumb, no?  There was a funny post on a UCLA board that said if Stanford's first string QB is back, that UCLA will likely lose by 20; but if they play their back-up again, then UCLA will lose by 30.... It's not a good time to be a UCLA fan it seems.

RE: UCLA depth chart - Langdude - 10-14-2019

Our depth is razor thin.

OL woes are well documented. But look at backups listed elsewhere. OLB backups are a walk-on and a sophomore who has played in one game this year. Beecher is backup for both ILB spots. True frosh McGill is the backup for both safety spots, and corner is not much better. Probably the only position where we are OK is WR, and semi-OK at RB (I wish we had Speights) and TE (blockers a-plenty, which is helping our offensive line, but no credible receiving threat outside Parkinson).

#5 from Washington considers Tucker Fisk to be a credible threat:

Yet Stanford is a 9.5 point favorite, suggesting UCLA has it just as bad or worse.

I'm going to assume West is the starter because that's how this season is going for Stanford. If the steelers can thrash the Chargers with their 3rd string QB, so too can Stanford extended the win streak over the baby bears.

If West is the starter look for Shaw to try to control the clock and the game by running the ball. If we can do that with a predominantly freshman OL I will be impressed.

West is going to have to be able to throw the ball effectively. Not for a ton of yardage but he has to complete passes. I distinctly remember Chryst stinking up the joint at home two years ago against UCLA. We would have lost that game because we had zero offense. He got his bell rung early, KJ came in, and Stanford went from a likely "L" to a big win in the blink of an eye. Granted, UCLA is worse than they were two years ago, but I'm not sure if they're dramatically worse.

Yes, our depth is crazy thin, but at least on defense, we are seeing an improved lineup with the fill-ins/upgrades.  Pryts and Robinson seem to be improving as the season goes on. Reid played as well or better than Fox did at OLB.  McGill supplanted Parsons and Williams in the rotation and seems to be an upgrade at safety/nickel. Same for Kelly over Eboh.  A healthy Head will provide some quality snaps, but we have such little depth beyond the starters. We are subject to the defense wearing down if they are on the field a lot, but I feel good about the 11 guys we are putting out there.  The biggest help to our defense will be a ball controlling offense that keeps the number of possessions down. By the way, only Toohill is out of eligibility after this season. Defense may become a strength again for Stanford.

It appears that Andres Fox and Sinclair may be redshirting for non-injury reasons. That means we can use Sinclair for 3 more games and Fox for 1 more game if necessary if more injuries pile up and we want to keep their redshirt in tact.

I am sure they are dramatically worse. If nothing else, no Rosen. Their defense is also much worse than two years ago. That said, we still have to actually show up in order to win. Probably we can do it by running the ball, because their run defense has been weak. However, it isn't wise to count on that. We have to take what they give us. If West is the QB, they will dare us to pass for sure. If he is as good as advertised, he should be able to do enough.

RE: UCLA depth chart - needle - 10-14-2019

I think UCLA will be desperate. Chip is coaching for his job at this point.

They've also been playing better on offense in recent weeks: 492 yds, 27 first downs in their loss against Oregon State.

I predict a lot of points and a nailbiting finish.

Yeah, but it was OSU and it was a loss!  We need to take them seriously, of course, but it is striking that we are talking about how much better they are looking against Oregon State, whose only win this season may well come against UCLA.

If you want to cite offense, what scares me is what they did in the second half against WSU.

RE: UCLA depth chart - Spiny_Norman - 10-14-2019

UCLA still does not know who their QB will be on Thursday. Dorian Thompson-Robinson who led the great comeback vs. WSU injured his leg vs. Arizona. He returned to practice on Saturday. If he does not start, it will be Austin Burton who played vs. OSU.

Also Chip said on Sunday that he is not contemplating changes to the defensive coaching staff despite UCLA ranking 129th in passing yards allowed, 127th in total yards and 127th in yards per play.

RE: UCLA depth chart - Class_of_75 - 10-14-2019

From Gostanford:
No decision: Shaw has not announced his starting quarterback for UCLA. He did rule out Costello following Monday's practice and called Davis Mills somewhere between "questionable and doubtful." Jack West has taken all of the first team reps this week in team periods

RE: UCLA depth chart - Spiny_Norman - 10-14-2019

Damn, add one more to the injured list.

Quote:Senior outside linebacker Jordan Fox and sophomore outside linebacker Tobe Umerah are sidelined indefinitely.

Umerah got his first career sack at the end of the Washington game. Everything was looking up for him. Now sidelined indefinitely.

RE: UCLA depth chart - Goose - 10-14-2019

It is looking very probable that we will get a good look at Jack West. I am assuming that Shaw is being straight with us, and that Mills really is tweaked enough not to play. It wouldn't be prudent to start West as "good enough" if Mills is really able to play, and I don't think Shaw would do that. Shaw has said that West can make all the throws. We may get the opportunity to see if that is so. I am sure we will try to overpower UCLA on the ground, but that may just not work. Hopefully West is ready.

I realize that is Shaw's MO, but it will be particularly true if West is the QB.
Hope West works out, because we may be seeing a lot of him in the next year and a half, especially if Costello decides to leave after this year. Mills, for all his talents, simply can not stay healthy.

RE: UCLA depth chart - OutsiderFan - 10-15-2019

I'm not real big on the S&C being tied to injury rate, but the amount of injuries this Stanford football team is suffering is really testing my assumptions.

RE: UCLA depth chart - Phogge - 10-15-2019

My question is whether Fox and Umerah were hurt in game action or practice. Seems like a bunch of injuries have been incurred in practice. If so WTF is going on?

OF questioning S&C is ok because after two years of playing M*A*S*H* football this doesn’t smell of coincidence.
