Is there a fund that folks can give to in order to supplement the financial aid package for students like her? Although Stanford financial aid is better than other universities, in my day it was always a bit short of what is really needed. For folks who's families are able to provide some money, the aid is great. But students whose families are really strapped need some source of funds that doesn't involve working almost full time on the side, like full ride students did in my day.
This is my in-laws story, with the twist that my son-in-law's father made it out of the tomato fields, and became a small businessman. He's a very modest guy, who says very little about that. But I have met few, if any, human beings who have been as upwardly mobile as he.
Their son, my son-in-law, is an ob-gyn, courtesy of UC Irvine and the USC Medical School. That is the American story. It still happens.
I wouldn't give you two cents for all your fancy rules if, behind them, they didn't have a little bit of plain, ordinary, everyday kindness - yeah, and a little looking out for the other fella, too.
