My home BBS good stuff to noise ratio isn't always great.  Folks following the topic might focus on posted comments from an academic adviser who wanted to help a troubled player. 

There is no resolution to the story, still imo it's interesting how sympathetic professionals approach the issue.

I don't hate everything about the b.ears....I love, for example, b.ear traps (the killing ones that are shaped like trombones).

Seriously, there has been such a change in attitudes toward gays (a generational thing) that I can't imagine that Calif will be proud of that vote much longer.  I also can't imagine that it will pass legal scrutiny.  Everyone is (or should be) equal before the law.  Churches can refuse gay marriage but I don't see how the government can.  Government works best when it enlarges freedom rather than restricts it.

My son (who played football at UCLA) knew of a couple of gay players there and, I am proud to say, he didn't even find it remarkable (altho he did say some players did react negatively to it).

This fool's first reaction, from your deliberately offputting first para was, lets saay (searching for less offensive / waffley words), um,  confliction?  That's when I knee-jerk punched the Dislike vote lever on the nifty software, available ever since the upgrade.

Probably you're not always unreasonable to strangers?  Offered as a token semi-peace offering from a frequently bruised outsider while mining the very best content from here, to share on the other side of our little pond.  And bring minor stuff back when possible, like earlier in this thread for instance.

Kumbayah, kumbayah, gonna try harder to go forward without personal hostility. Which, presumably turned around from the home rivalry POV, shucks, definitely ain't gonna happen, nor should it given keyword Rivalry. 

The cool software (seriously, thanks alot webmasters) only allows us to adjust an initial down vote to Thumbs Up.  If I had a sideways corrective option probably that'd be my choice now.

Hopefully other partisans will fix my reaction.

My sister was a college-level basketball player (I once watched her score 25 points in a 27-26 game in high school) who became an MP in the US Army.  She was 17, I was 18 when she came out to me in 1981.  It was not, shall we say, big news to me, I thought it was pretty obvious and I was certainly supportive.  She asked "What do you think Dad will say?"  I said (and I was right) "he literally won't know what to do or think."  It took him about a year to get it, five years to accept it. 

Only one thing about my sister left me queasy.  A female teacher hit on her when my sister was 16 and had never had an intimate gay experience to that point.  I asked her, years later, how she felt about it...did she want to report the teacher, did she encourage it, how did she handle it?

Separately, I knew a female college basketball player very well who expressly chose her college in order to minimize her contact with gay women in the locker room, both with respect to the coaching staff and the players.  She doesn't have an issue with it now, but she definitely did as a 17 year old.
